Because it was chalked up as an og, Phillips can’t be credited with an assist? this seems a bit harsh. Had the goal been credited to Cole, Phillips would have the assist. How does that work?

You can't give assists for these. If we start down this road, we'll be giving assists to defenders who pass to opposition strikers who then score.
It was an excellent cross, and in reality it was his assist. But I guess it can't officially be an assist because he won't have been aiming to pass to their defender to put into his own net. Good example of the limitation of using data alone to assess a player.
Maybe we should, I reckon we'd have a few well placed using that metric. Particularly if we also gave assists to defenders who let the ball bounce over their head and look gormless.
That does feel a bit harsh to me. Comical own goals I get but he’s put a brilliant ball in for it. Just looking at his stats now, in the last 8 games he has 5 goal involvements (goals and assists) or 6 if you count last night. I wonder if his form of last season is starting to come back? I’ll be honest there’s often games where I don’t really seem to notice him being involved but if he can get back to his goal and assist output of last season, that will impact games enough.
