Currently we - unimaginatively play - ‘Hey Jude’ to celebrate a home win with the players after the match. Unimaginatively, because it’s a tune that - for me - is associated with another team - I think Brentford every time I hear it - and is now widely used throughout the sporting landscape. In addition, I associate it with last season and with Michael Duff’s team. Personally, I believe we should have a new song for this manager and team and it should be unique to Barnsley. Also, I feel this could help unite the supporters and get behind the NCB - Neil Collins’ Barnsley. This opens up the question of what we should replace it with. Personally, I’d like it… to be unique to Barnsley not be by any artist overtly associated with another club (I.e. Man City and Oasis or Watford and Elton John) by a classic or cult artist (though not the Beatles or Neil Diamond as their songs are already widely used) be upbeat and/or uplifting easy to sing, hum or clap to I believe there are a couple of approaches we can potentially follow. One we replicate the attributes of 'Hey Jude' in using another classic sing along ballad. My suggestion, and it’s unashamedly Scottish (well so is our head coach) and I know I’m going to get pelters for this - is ‘Sailing’ by Rod Stewart. I did consider going down the opposite to the Beatles route and picking a random upbeat Stones track like ‘Like a Rainbow’ but I can just imagine hearing a cacophony of the Oakwell faithful belting out ‘Sailing’ until the end of the season celebrating multiply NCB wins are we march onwards and upwards. An alternative to Sailing - I know we don’t need one - would be following a different approach in using a song where the supporters can accompany the tune ala 'Chelsea Dagger' at the Darts. Again - unashamedly Scottish as our head coach and more a Cult artist than a Classic - I suggest 'Midnight Moses' by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Was tempted to go with 'Giddy Up A Ding Dong' but it was a little too glam for the Oakwell faithful. Do you think we need another post match anthem and if so what do you suggest?
Personally, I'd rather do away with it altogether! It proper bugs me all that booming music when they come out etc.
Not sure if it fits where we are now but when I remember in the flitcroft great escape season the whole ground seemed to join in singing Three Little Birds. I remember the players saying how much it helped them on the field to relax and enjoy playing football. Don’t know if it’s fits us now like it said but it felt like our song for a while.
Doesn't tick all thi' boxes, but Queen's 'One Vision' works for me every time - that opening guitar riff, cranked up, lovely stuff. Not particularly a Queen fan, but always a bit surprised nobody's 'claimed' it.
Daft Punk - One More Time Imagine…….we win Exeter on Saturday after another thrilling performance……..the music hits at the end as the team get applauded……..all the fans in Ponty then pull out and stick on an illuminous green vest and celebrate like that Vigo Venn on BGT. Be a reight laugh and unique.
