The Miners Strike - C4

Just a heads up, a new 3 part documentary on the miners strike starts tonight 9pm on Channel 4.

"The Miners' Strike 1984: The Battle for Britain."

 

I'm looking forward to it, but there's something about the title, I think it's the word "for " that I just don't like for some reason.

 

Did my 12 month on strike but I think I’ll give it a miss.

 

Hopefully not an attempt to rewrite history

The Battle for Britain? What's the angle here?

Kin ell, my blood pressure is already in the red and I've only read the title. I probably shouldn't watch that.

 

Brilliant! About bloody time.

 

With it being on Channel 4 I'd hope it's an honest assessment that looks at the strike more from the miners side.

 

Just read "The Enemy Within: The Secret War Against the Miners", no TV program dare speak THAT truth, not so far anyway.

 

I assumed the 'for' in the title was deliberate and telling. Using 'of' would have been a bit lazy and ignored by most, thinking about 1945, Spitfires an' that. It was a battle 'for' Britain - the Britain built on the backs of the workers, miners and manufacturing, or a new Britain modelled on Thatcher's dogma.

 

If anyone sees them selves please let us know.
Remember watching it all on tv and supporting you all in your battles with police.
Utter scum bags they were. Thatchers storm troopers.

 

I was stationed at RAF Gutersloh in Germany at the time, so did not see a lot of it. But many of my family & friends were affected by the happenings back then.

The film presents testimony that is sure to strengthen calls for a public inquiry. South Yorkshire Police told the programme: “It would not be appropriate for the South Yorkshire Police of today to seek to explain or defend the actions of the force in 1984.

 

I was told by a mining mate that in the winter of the strike one of the local picket groups were really pissed off by the aggressive policing and monitoring so they built a snowman. The snowman was however constructed around a post box. The miners then proceeded to taunt the police until, unable to take the abuse any longer, the police decided to spoil the miners fun. They drove the police car straight into the snowman....

 

That story definitely did the rounds. Whether true or not I couldn't confirm. Funny either way.
But if I had an hr or 2 to write em all on here. I could definitely tell some funny stories that I was involved in. And some serious s4It about the police actions but definitely the Met in particular. B'stds. I Could write a book.
I had a big disagreement shall we say, on another chat site years ago with a copper from the Met who tried to besmirch the miners. And tried to convince others on the forum the met were all sweetness and light. Let's just say he got more than he could chew. Lying B'std.

 

A friend of mine, ex Bradford Police and a socialist told me lots of stories. He has not got a good word to say about Met Police involvement in those dark times.

 

There was a story doing the rounds that at the Police compound at Orgreave, where they kept their dogs, a miner let a bitch on heat loose and the police dogs went berserk so couldn't be used that day.

 

I've watched the first 2 episodes, and cried several times.
Truth and justice for the miners will come out one day.
Sadly I think I won't be here to witness this.
It's heart breaking to see so many older guys who are not around watching the old videos .
Looking back in hindsight we really walked into maggies trap ,she knew what she was doing.
It's so sad to see what we beleived in was a proper struggle, and lost.
Police state and definitely a case of divide and conquer.
I was there and part of the last bastion against smashing the unions.
Sad series , history that we fought and lost.

I've watched all 3 Baz. And some bitter memories of those that colluded with the government towards the end of the 3rd and how one person within the government advisers made it completely political. And advised no deal.
The Orgreave one (episode 2) should leave no one in any doubt as to the violence of the police and the attempted cover up. Like Hillsborough, police statements in effect copied on orders. I'll not go into the 3rd too much as you've not watched it. but given what you said. You will be left fuming how we were betrayed by those who fought against us. My impression was allus "Not my pit so fekk em" they would not support a strike.
