As a callow youth, I loved subbuteo. I have the following Subbuteo Continental (3d) teams: Barnsley Everton Burnley Norwich City Coventry City Newcastle United Leeds United Argentina (I must have got this in 1966) Barcelona. I would play league games with me operating both teams making up the names and recording the scores, scorers and updating league tables.
Poor goalkeeping for that goal, really should have done better. He'll be disappointed with himself after that.
This is spooky. I was in the shower this morning and had a random thought about how much my Subbuteo set would be worth. I had the Euro 96 one with England and Norway in. In the late 90s, they used to do Premier League teams, in their own boxes. So I have a Barnsley one, differentiated from the other red ones by ORA being inscribed on the front. Though a few of the players got broken over the years, so we recruited a couple of Norwegians. I also had Wednesday, theirs was the kit with the thick white stripe down the middle (96/97), and I had Chelsea too. The box is in no condition, the goal posts never stayed up (I had some pro action soccer ones which were sturdier, but I got blackcurrant on the netting), the scoreboard is broken (again, pro action soccers was better) and between 5 teams, I reckon there's 10 headless players (all nicknamed Regis).
I got Barnsley for Christmas off my uncle Colin and they were the same shirts as the red shirts in the box.
Ditto. Everton always did well because, for some reason, the blue and white set of players seened to be slightly better balanced than the other teams.
Not subbuteo related, but on colours. I searched 'Red and white bar scarf' on Amazon* for a new one for Wembley last May. It took me to a site with a drop down list where you could choose from Barnsley, Aberdeen, Middlesboro, Liverpool, Arsenal etc ........... Barnsley and Liverpool were showing as out of stock, so I chose an Aberdeen. It was the same bl00dy scarf fgs. * (yes, would have got from club but they had none in)
I got mine from a sports shop on Barnsley Rd, Cudworth owned by none other than the great Harry Hough!!!
Nat Lofthouse played for Bolton & England. All the players, not surprisingly looked the same. I thought they resembled Gill Merrick the Birmingham & England goalie from the 50s.
I found my box of subutteo the other day never had any stadium just the scoreboard, I can remember setting it up at my mates on the floor only for his Labrador to walk across it breaking half of the players
Exactly the same! also there was the sports shop above wh smiths was it Suggs or don valley?went there too and had about 30 teams ...mum still has em at her house....my fav kit (which was given to me) was Zaire (green shirts and yellow shorts) and the old leeds away yellow kit with blue and yellow down the shirts and shorts....happy days.
A few years back I decided I'd sell my teams and I think I did sell the Newcastle United one. I bitterly regret it even though I've barely laid eyes on the rest since. I keep thinking about making a wooden frame to put one player from each team in and sticking it on the wall.
Ahh I forgot about the score board in the 'extras' bit lol. Was it just a manual one, or was there an electric looking one that needed batteries. As for that bit about the pet dog running across the pitch and breaking things, that made me laugh lol. You just can't trust dogs anymore can you.
That's where l used to get my teams from, only place in tarn wasn't it? I had a good collection, a few teams, floodlights, scoreboard, dug outs, one stand and a load of unpainted supporters. Spent hours on it, theres some brilliant sets on ebay
I had the one where you had to cut the team strips out and slot them into the scoreboard, a wheel on the back turned the scores
Same as pal......was never a subutteo fan ......Striker all day for me, push head darn n player kicked ball, better than flicking anyday lol
I played many FA Cup tournaments by myself and, amazingly, Barnsley usually went far! Games were 5 or 6 minutes each way
My introduction to Subby was when I got the World cup '82 edition, for my birthday. Spain & Argentina were the two teams in the box set, and for some weird reason, I wasn't that bothered about that team and I didn't mind too much about them getting broken!. Apart from one of them though, who I pretended was the little 'Tottingham' wizard Ossie Ardiles.
