Originally it was supposed to be taken down the same weekend that the new one opened but then the opening got delayed and the old one just sits there.
Still think it would be better lit up red and white for night home games along with the car park wall...
I suspect it’ll only be taken down once any snagging has been completed on the bridge surface. So if they have to close it for a few days, the other is still there. In regards the lifts - a lot of parts for these are made abroad these days. Even simple parts can be a nightmare at times depending on the make of lift.
Went over it for the first time on Monday. It was dry so didn't see any puddles aforementioned but there was a couple of fellers doing a bit of work on one side of the stairway, couldn't tell what though.
At the weekend there was a man doing something with the LED lighting under what I would guess would be classed as the bannister along the side on the stairway at the town side
hi , yea i go over bridge twice a day , and also football matches of course . Its a good looking structure very impressive for barnsley and a good advert for the town but yea the lifts need sorting dont know why its taking so long , also when it rains your wading through standing water on steps .
It looks 10x worse when the lights are on. Have a look before and after the game and you’ll know what I mean.
Scheduled to be removed overnight on the 16th March. It requires possession of the railway and a crane so needs to be booked and agreed with Network Rail. Obviously the last slot was missed due to the delayed opening of the bridge.
I get why the council wanted to make it a landmark, and I do think it’s pretty impressive, but the whole thing feels a little over-engineered for what it is. I’m not keen on the glass sides and I hate that awful ‘gold’ cladding - neither of which were part of the original design. The surface is awful - especially on the side closest to the interchange. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere for surface water to run off so it just gathers in puddles. Let’s hope the council get it fixed pronto!
I really like those glass sides, not at all what was on the original plan, but nice to see though/over. Do you happen to know when the miners' child statue will be brought back or where it will go?
I saw something on this the other day. It's in storage at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and is returning when the paving around the bridge (town side) is completed. In fact a plinth to accommodate it is being incorporated into the paving work.
