Do not mess about with asbestos. Get someone in who knows what they are doing so that it is removed and disposed of safely.
Get the experts in. No chance I'd remove it or take it to the dumpit site myself, sitting in an enclosed space with recently disturbed asbestos seems a really bad idea.
Plus Smithies dumpit dont even want to take rubbish so yve not a prayer wi asbestos...get an expert..
If your dumpit take it at all, they will definitely only take it sealed in specialist disposal bags. Whilst these are readily available, avoidance of inhalation of dust during removal is not to be taken trivially, even outdoors. I wouldn't be going near without at least a fit-tested FFP3 mask, disposable overalls and gloves, all of which would be going in the bag when I'd done. Actually, scrub that. I just wouldn't be going near it.
Depends what type of asbestos it is. The old asbestos garage roofs anything similar to that are fine to remove yourself and bag in the specialist disposal bags along as the pieces don't brake. But if unsure just ring a expert.
In the 70's our house had a garage with an asbestos apex roof and rear flat-roof annex, also asbestos. My sister and me and our friends all played on that roof, and in the long hot summer of 76 we must have picnic'd on it every day. No trays, or napkins, just summer snacks and sandwiches eaten fresh off the asbestos. Gulp.
Wow hopefully nothing comes of that. There's a rating on each object I'm pretty sure the garage door stuff is very low score if undamaged. But having said that I wouldn't eat my tea off it nowadays.
I got rid of a garage roof via the council (Donny).. it wasn't asbestos.. but looked like it, and despite being printed on it they wouldn't pick it up but if I packed it into the special bags I could take it the one designated site.
You hve to make arrangements with BMBC, then go to West Street to pick up some special bags (5 max for free), then when you've filled and sealed them ( with a tie-wrap) call them again to arrange to take them to West Street.
Wouldn't do it myself, I had to watch a video when I worked at the steel works in Scunny in 2015. Scared the bejabers out of me.
If you end up doing it yourself make sure you keep it wet, it's the bits you cannot see what does the damage. In the seventies they sprayed it with a sugary glue water substance to hold it together. I know it's a comfort to wear a mask but no filter can stop the dangerous bits what get into the lungs or skin.
They were, but they were phased out 50 years ago. If you were in school before then, you were probably handling asbestos. Although it's only a problem if the material began to perish. Brake pads/shoes/linings were far more problematic as that material is designed to wear. Wasn’t cheap, came to about £1500 for removal of what was essentially a few bits of asbestos plaster board, but they tested it and it was one of the more dangerous ones so they had to tent off most of the upstairs while they removed it. Rather that than some cowboy though so just had to suck up the cost.
We used to make dens out of the old asbestos boards laying about when were kids. Some were that old they had green moss growing on them.
