If Williams plays the ball better, MDG doesn't have to make any tackle. Williams, time and again, gets bullied off the ball again. It's been happening all season
It was also Durand's weak free header that put Williams in an almost impossible decision to start with.
If we're going off the OPs assumption that Pines is actually good, I'd select Pines, MCG and Earl with Williams at RWB and Cadden at LWB.
No wonder we can't keep a clean sheet if we're having to protect our centre back from challenging for the ball.
If you talking about Saturday when he loses out, if he is rwb and not center back he doesn't need to get bullied as he wouldn't be getting involved in as many physical duels. The goal Tuesday night MDG was more at fault than Williams.
MDG was not at fault for Tuesday night's goal at all as far as I can see. He headed the ball away first of all and then when another of their players ran at him he stopped him getting past. The ball then broke kindly for a pass down the wing by the the bloke he'd halted. After that you could make more of a case of negligence against Williams for not making much of an effort to stop the cross, and all 3 (goalie, Earl and Cadden) in the 6 yard box for not doing better to clear it. Picking MDG as the villain smells to me of an agenda, especially when you pick him out to blame for Saturday's goal too which was blatantly Williams' error, plus nobody picked the scorer up in the box either.
The goal starts from a throw what are you talking about? Watch the goal back MDG make a header then goes to tackle the shrew player and doesn't make the tackle the lad plays the ball to the left who squares it along the 6yard and it goes in. MDG makes the tackle the goal doesn't happen. 2 goals in a row him putting a tackle in could have prevented a goal.
You don't think he was at fault at all? Really? There's no agenda he's been good for us on the most but it's just my opinion he could have won the ball when he goes to his man to win the ball otherwise you leave us open. Having just watched it again he MDG didn't stop the player from getting passed and the player passed the ball.
He's been played out of position all season. MDG is a center back you have to make tackles past 2 goals we've conceded he failed to tackle.
Your previous post suggest that Williams doesn't need to get into aerial duals if he's a right back. Whether he is or isn't both last two goals have been inside 8 minutes. Williams has hardly made any challenges. Anyways, we'll leave it there. You obviously have an agenda against MDG, I don't know why. If you think Williams is playing well and MDG isn't, then I'm glad you aren't picking the team...
You play the 3 players in form. It is pretty simple. Leave it to the head coach. He's not got too much wrong this season TBH. He's admitted getting it wrong on occasions, which is more a reason to trust him. I hope Pines features soon, as we seem to be lacking a bit of aerial / positional strength at times & hope that is what he can add.
The goal you talk about v orient where he gets out muscled for the header if he's rwb he's not challenging for that header as he's stood where cotter is. A rwb (Williams best position) will have less ariel duels to win in a game of football than a center half that's a fact. I have a agenda because I think MDG played a big part in the last 2 goals we have conceded? Seriously? Maybe you have an agenda with Williams.
For me, the answer is simple & agree with GordonO & Wombwell.... Pines - Mael - Earl Reasons are: 1. Minimal change, which is lower risk. Move Jordan up & slot in Pines. 2. OP invites us to assume Pines is good, but we can sub him & go back to how we were as a backstop. 3. Mael owns the centre & is the reason the (really good) Lopata is out on loan getting game time. 4. Mael is also our current bbs player of the season...if you think he should be dropped, get your bumps felt. There's also the 2 assists in 2 games. 5. Similarly, Earl owns the left. Debut player of match & just 7pts behind McCart in our bbs player of the season, not forgetting McCart is coming back from injury & belongs to Rotherham. Also wholeheartedly agree with the gaffer. Jordan has been brilliant playing out of position & it's completely understood he makes the occasional error but he's a team player and it's for the greater good. If we're promoted, he's oven ready championship quality wing back & just hope we can keep him.
Williams was at fault for Cadden scoring and own goal and for Mael falling over instead of tacking Moncur…
He’s definitely not had a ‘terrible season’. He’s clearly made some high profile individual mistakes but his pace has saved us far more & he brings the ball out well from the back.
Assuming Pines is decent then the hope has to be that we go with a back 3 of Pines, De Gevigney & Earl with Williams back to wing back.
