Of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. One of the bizarre 1960s pop group names. Tich died today aged 80. Here’s one of their hits:
Bought their greatest hits when I was a teenager. They did some great singles. This has always been my favourite and evidently Edgar Wright is fond of the song too!
Tony Blackburn played this today without mentioning Titch’s demise. I rediscovered this one from an episode of Pick of the Pops last year. It was written by the late Alan Blakely from the Tremeloes. His daughter plays Mrs. Devine in Father Brown.
I think he broadcasts live as he is always on about it being dark. If it was recorded he could iron out the gaffes. There is usually one every week. He mistook Sandie Shaw for Cilla Black this morning. I suppose we ought to cut him a bit of slack as he is 81.
He eventually apologised for the error quoting the excitement about his new studio. Yeah right Tony!!
I never missed SOTS when our old mate Brian Matthew was presenting it. When Brian was unwell my favourite stand in was Tim Rice, although Johnnie Walker did a good job too. But as likeable as Tony Blackburn is, he turned it into a wedding disco or an office party. Gone were the obscurities, with the nuggets of information about them. Every band he played he seemed to play their biggest hit. I got fed up with it and drifted away, which was good, because they started putting it on earlier and earlier. Back in Mathew’s day, and pre-kids, I used to get turfed out of the bedroom at 8 and had to listen to it in the spare bedroom, whilst the wife nursed her hangover. So I’d listen to it whilst playing Championship Manager usually, and I wasn’t allowed back in the bedroom until Foot Tapper came on!
