I agree. I'm not trying to say they're on the poverty line or anything... but a League 1 footballer is in the top ~1,500 footballers in England. Hardly ridiculous for them to make that much is it.
Or in the case of Roberts, in the top 50 goalkeepers. However, as an interesting comparison I wonder what the 50th best tennis, snooker or golf players in the country earn.
Not really comparable though, as there won't be 10,000+ people watching the 50th best tennis, golf or snooker player in the country and all the money that's involved with that.
If I've read it right Elliot Slessor is the current 50th best Snooker player. At 29 years old his earnings are £344,570 so far. Much longer career for Snooker players than footballers though. A lot less viewers too.
Tax and NI contributions would give a net of £134.k A good accountant would raise that substantially. Max pension contribution of £60k alone would give an extra 12.5k in less tax. There are so many tax loopholes. Some legal some not. That will be utilised.
I'm sure they do all they can but there's not loads you can do when being paid with PAYE. Between 100k and 125k it's often worth upping pension contributions to get you below 100k to avoid the 60% trap, but above that there's not much you can do. I'm sure they max out their pensions as they should, but it doesn't change my point in the slightest.
.Genuine question Journo. Are you betraying a confidence. Or does the source allow you to post their comments. Tbh he/she if so. Is treading a fine line.
I wonder how much the rest of our players are on? I have no idea btw just curious....another possible way of looking at this would be do we pay one very good keeper £5k per week (with a back up keeper on not much) or two above average keepers say £2k per week?.....or permutations around that (you get what I mean).
I'm guessing that the first team squad will be on between £2k and £8k. Upper end - Cole, Kane, Connell. Lower end - punts signed after relegation, such as Cotter, Lopata, Shepherd.
Even lower level than Oldham, Doncaster City signed Ross Mccormack, Wes Hoolan, Charlie Mulgrew and Scott McLaughlin for a Northern Counties top of table clash - rumours they were on 3K each to play!
Why can't footballers do the same as anyone else who is made redundant and just find another job when they retire? 30-40 years of sitting around before they qualify for a state pension would drive me insane.
He isn't in the top 50 goalkeepers. The Premier League clubs will have 2 0r 3 goalkeepers at least who would be considered better than Roberts. The Championship clubs will have 2 at least - remember Roberts is not even needed as sub goalie for Boro. Arguably Boro have 3 keepers still at the club who could be considered as good as Roberts, plus Orient's keeper who looked unbeatable for 88 minutes is on loan from Boro. So if you drew up a list I reckon Roberts would be well out of the top 100. Not that I don't think he's good enough for us.
