Great place for a little un. He’ll be able to see real engines and trains. Not the feeble tissue-boxes on wheels we’ve got now.

Great place for young uns. They have a ride on train for them too in the gardens. It’s also only a 5 minute walk from the city centre.

Good grief you walk fast! It’s around ten mins from the railway station to the NRM depending on which platform you arrive on. From the city centre (eg the Minster) it’s at least 20 minutes walk.

I'd follow up with a trip to Church Fenton for the air display. Loved that when my dad took me there as a kid. Owt to get em out and seeing real stuff rather than staring at a screen.

Especially the model railway bit. You can eat in there too (if you've got deep pockets).

I was hugely underwhelmed by Jorvik when we went a couple of years ago, really enjoyed the National Railway Museum though

Id recommend the Castle Museum too, though probably not for a 4 year old

Yes you can and it is well sign posted. Once you are over the far side of the station you can see the museum and there is a pathway from there until you have to cross a road to get inside. It’s the best FREE attraction in York but I’m not sure if a four year old will want to see all of it. You can get inside some of the exhibits

castle museum is great. Think we got some joint ticket thing for Jorvik probably not worth full whack but when mine were 4 they loved it. Passé by the time they were 6 mind you.

It’s under massive redevelopment at the moment. Only the main hall (the first bit that was opened) is currently open with the other stuff across the road being majorly redeveloped. You might want to check the website for what is viewable.

Me and the missus went a couple of weeks ago (she’s understanding like that!).

if your four year old likes trains he’ll love it - I always do and I’m only really into diesel and electric stuff.

I’ve been lots of times and now that I live just outside York I should go more often. There’s lots of grownup stuff for rail enthusiasts but I’m sure your boy will get something out of it

Went Jorvik last year - thought it was brilliant. Big queue though so would be better to pre-book mate.

I remember my first visit. My Grandad just died. He left my Dad a few quid. Dad bought a blue Ford Capri and one of first trips was to York to National Railway Museum. I remember weird decorators stairs up to the loco cabs and running off into a loco cab and my mum coming to get me.
