I suspect @Load Bearing Pillar meant to quote my Tindersticks post rather than the Death Cab one.

In terms of those albums that i have consistently listened to over he past 30 years?

    Sugar - Copper Blue
    Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
The Replacements All shook down, Tim, Let it Be, Sorry Ma forgot to take out the trash.......all their albums basically and owt Westerberg has ever done.
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (heavenly!)
Ornette Coleman- Shape of Jazz to Come
    Cymande - Cymande

Newer stuff - I'm a bit obsessed with Alvvays - Blue Rev album, not a duff track on it.

King of America is my fave EC album. A peak of his songwriting I think. Just such dense poetic lyrics.

I was only trying to remember last night who else was on the bill when I saw Carter in Brighton. It was the first Essential Festival they held and was an indie all dayer. Small for a festival and all the bands were in one big tent, with a stage at either end, so one stage was dismantled and set up whilst the next band started their set at the other end, so we all just had to move from one end of the tent to the other. It was a good line up and one of the best performances from the Charlatans I’ve seen (and I’ve seen them loads). The other things I remember from it were…

    - the electric going during Dodgy’s set, so whilst they fixed it Nigel grabbed an acoustic guitar, climbed down into the middle of the crowd and led us in a sing song
    - Norman from the Fannies going on and on about how they were better than Oasis
    - how awkward it was, because me and long-term girlfriend had bought the tickets whilst still together, but had recently split up. We bumped into each other and watched the bands together, but when the Charlatans came on, who were ‘our’ band, she burst into tears and walked out. I stayed. Great set. Not particularly proud of myself, mind!

    the bands were…

    Skunk Anansie
    My Life Story
    Reef
    The Lightning Seeds
    Dodgy
    Carter USM
    Teenage Fanclub
    Pop Will Eat Itself
    Gene
    The Charlatans

They each did about 45 minutes. Here’s The Charlatans setlist. As I say, one of the best gigs I’ve seen them do.

I hate Jazz, it's musical wanking.

Except Kind of Blue which transcends all boundaries and is one of the greatest musical compositions ever.

This is my favourite cover version of all time.

Carter USM were the band people most associate me with (as I spent pretty much all of 6th form and university years wearing their t-shirts). Saw them countless times live and still go to watch Jim Bob's solo shows, which are highly recommended. Going to see him again on 3rd May in Manchester where he's playing two separate sets, one with just a piano backing him and one with a full band. He'll play a mix of solo material (which is very good) and Carter classics. Sing-a-long-a-tastic!

That is an incredible line up.

And the Fannies were and are better than Oasis by several country miles

I didn't realise JimBob was still touring. What's Fruitbat up to these days? Any chance of them appearing on stage again together?

Jimbobs albums are really could. Play Jos Got Papercuts best lyrics of any song I’ve heard in the last 5 years. He was great in Leeds when I saw him and also off to Manchester in May. He’s also written a couple of really good books.

    Fruitbat is in a band

    https://abdou.co.uk/

From what I’ve read no big fall out (they still share a publicist and website) just the end of a their creative partnership and Jimbob can’t hit the notes for some of the Carter songs anymore so I can’t see them playing together.

He tours separately, sometimes with Abdoujaparov, sometimes solo. He was in Ferocious Dog for a while, but not any more.

He's turned up at Jim Bob gigs more than once, but only in the audience, rather than onstage, so I think that ship has well and truly sailed. Their final Carter gig in Brixton in 2014 was something special.
