Great away following too, 50% of their Home average . Big game for both clubs. 1 automatic place and 1 playoff winners place up for grabs. To the national league. The automatic is Tamworth's to lose.
I’m a bit conflicted about this. I watch a lot of tier 6 football and when you get an ex league club drop in it changes the dynamic quite significantly. Usually the fans of said club spend a while giving it billy big balls before they realise there are a few decent teams. I don’t think celebrating breaking attendance records warrants great celebration when they shouldn’t be in the league in the first place…. Oh actually they should because they were crap last year (and usually a few years on the trot)
Scunthorpe's very existence was in doubt until recently thanks to a rogue owner. Looks like the whole town is rallying behind the club, which is great to see.
I think it's great they've broken the record - I get your meaning about billy big ******, but considering how much crap that fan base has gone through in recent years, from the championship to the 6th tier in 13 years, playing part-timers, is abysmal, and yet the continuous support they've had is great. That record is higher than their average attendance in the championship, by some margin. I think it's fantastic the fans are staying/coming in their worst moments. Very happy their owner is gone, they've had some great news this past couple of months and I hope it continues for them.
My thoughts on the subject of attendances when clubs drop out of the league. If you look ar most ex established league clubs attendances. They turn out in good numbers. (Especially when winning. Certainly more than when lower league(1-2). Going out of the league. Brings that fight back mentality. They built up a fan base because of/throughout league football. Most stay loyal. Eg Averages Scunny. 4k+ Chester 2k + Hereford 2.5k + Tamworth 1.2k+ About to win the league imo. It's so difficult to build a fan base overnight. Ex league clubs bring much needed revenur to those never having played in it. Only beaten on occasion by a local Derby. I remember when our town was rife with other local teams fans. Gradually, probably after Promotion to the 2nd tier 1980/81. That has become less and less. We fluctuate attendences because of where we are in the league at any one time. Some pack in. but return as soon as we get success.
Used to enjoy going to Scunny, even back when they played at the “old showground”, showing me age nar lol!
The scunny new stadium. apparantly to be started in the coming months. Is imo over ambitious. As much as a new stadium is nice to move into. Results on the pitch is what brings fans in on the main. Else it becomes a white elephant. 12k but able to extend to 18k with a budget of £18m (good luck with that.) Up to 50% from grant's.
Yes. Especially as we'd probably be tearing it up. I used to live in Chester when they were owned by a literal criminal, went bust and had to restart in the North West Counties league. They had great crowds as they stormed back to something like their natural level. They are currently below what they would see as that but then a lot of clubs are. As has been said, provided there is a ground big enough to play at I reckon our crowds would remain high and certainly outstrip Scunthorpe.
