Off the back of the discussion in the Manchester Derby thread…

Name your 26 man squad for the euros and pick your first 11 for the first game!

Henderson and Maguire will be first names on team sheet. Sterling will be in the squad too. That's three places wasted.

Foden, Grealish and Maddison will be selected and not play. That's another three wasted.

Phillips will go in place of Ward-Prowse. Bowen will be selected but Rashford will play because he does.

    Kane will Captain us.

Waste of time trying to second guess Southgate. There's always at least three week links in every 11 he puts out.

Wish you were wrong but knowing Southgate I think you're spot on

To be fair Grealish has had a poor season and Maddison is nowhere near the level of Rice, Bellingham or Foden.

Sadly I think you're right that Henderson (or maybe Phillips) will start.

I don’t really get this post.

Henderson wasn’t first choice at the last tournament but played his way into the team for Mount who was poor.

Sterling hasn’t played for England for ages.

We’re desperately short of centre backs that’s why Maguire still gets in. Players like Mount & Sterling have been phased out because he’s got better options in them positions.

It's the two holding midfielders regardless of skillset and situation that has held us back during Southgate's tenure.

I'd much rather have Rice and Ward-Prowse than Rice and Henderson or Henderson and Phillips.

When you play Henderson and Phillips you're playing with an extra two defenders. In effect it doesn't matter what system you're trying to play.

Yes they negate what the opposition is trying to do and in the most part do a job. They also hamper any forward play and make Kane and Rashford look like the chuckle brothers.

I really hope he doesn’t play Bellingham deep. What a waste that would be

Unfortunately it was an anti Southgate post. I apologise.

I'm not sure. It's possibly not his best position but Foden is an incredible attacking midfielder and our other deeper options aside from Rice are far worse than Bellingham playing there

    Pickford, Ramsdale, Pope

Walker, Trippier, Stones, Maguire, Guehi, Tomori, Gomez, Shaw

    Rice, Trent, Phillips, Barkley, Willock

Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Gordon, Palmer, Rashford, Bowen, Maddison

    Kane, Watkins

    My team right now -

    Pickford
    Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
    Trent Rice
    Saka Bellingham Foden
    Kane

    Notable absentees -

Henderson - We’ve got a lack of tenacious midfielders who can protect a back 4. It was him or Phillips for back up for Rice. Neither of them deserve to go but one has to due to a lack of options

Grealish - Never been a huge fan. Holds on to the ball too long. He also plays predominantly on the left which is also where I think Foden will play & where Rashford & Gordon are at their best.

James & Chilwell - Too unreliable. Footballers that don’t play football. Maybe a shout for Chilwell if he can stay fit until the summer but I don’t trust either of them. Joe Gomez has done really well at left back for Liverpool too & if he plays there you can narrow the back 3 & let Stones roam into midfield like he does for City.

Toney / Wilson - Both have missed too much football & if Kane gets injured I’d have Watkins ahead of them & then there’s Rashford & Bowen as options too. Kane doesn’t come off unless he’s injured or we’re several goals up so I don’t see a situation where we would ever bring in two out & out strikers mid-game anyway.

I’d play both further forward. I can’t see the point in stifling either Bellingham or Foden just to accommodate any of Rashford, Grealish, Maddison etc

Key decision for me is whether to play Bellingham in the 10 or holding.

If he plays 10 the other front three pick themselves (Kane up top with Foden and Saka wide). However, who do you play alongside Rice?

If he plays holding alongside Rice then it’s Foden in the 10, Saka wide and Kane up top, but who else plays wide?

Possibly controversial, but think I’d play:

    Pickford
    Walker Stones Maguire Chilwell
    TAA Rice
    Saka Bellingham Foden
    Kane
