Yeah it was Dave Copping who was dreadful at commentary lol, funny yeah, but for the wrong reasons. And I think he used to do regular pieces in the match programmmes.
Yes, he scored against Blackburn in (I think) 1990, if not 1991. He'd just signed for us. I was working in Darwen at the time and lived on Blackburn Road - was able to walk to Ewood Park and back (no more than a mile each way). He scored with a header in front of the Darwen End where The Reds fans were.....
Thanks for the film. Commentator said it was Brendan O'Connell - but that's the goal I remember. Oh well, I'm just very old and subject to (many) lapses of memory
You could tell that Banks had lost a little in his second spell. A free kick in his first spell would have decapitated anyone that tried to head it!
We got to meet him in the lounge on Saturday. He said he absolutely loved Barnsley and never wanted to leave. He lives in Bournemouth now working in a special education school (I think). He didn’t seem to have any interest in football whatsoever these days and just came to Wycombe to do them a favour and to access the free bar! Seemed a really nice bloke.
That's great to hear. He was/is a hero of mine. I never wanted him to leave either and just think if we'd have given him a 3 year contract instead of a transfer he'd have been a Premier league player.
Dave is indeed a top man.My favorite memory with Dave was watching an old match against Grimsby sat in the Wharncliffe up Sheffield Road prior to getting picked up for an away game. At the time I knew Dave pretty well but didn't know he did commentarys. While watching the game the commentator said about Mike Brolly (one for the older members) "at least if it rains Grimsby have a brolly"I turned round and said "whos this pillock commentating"got the shock of my life when Dave said Its me.
Dave Coping a staple of bfc from the early 90's. I'm pretty sure it was Grimsby at home and we had all 4 seasons throughout the match. Started warm and sunny then proceeded to bang it down and t'old Dave said "I think it's only a passing shower", only for it to start getting heavier and snowing
