I don't think I could renew my season ticket if he came back here. So glad for football in general that this coach has been found out by every club he has gone to. We were responsible for nearly spreading an anti football virus on the English football leagues.
No Struber did make the most of them and together with bringing in Sollbauer and Wigan’s points deduction managed to stave off relegation
The "But the style of football was *****" is a complete myth. High tempo, high press, leading to exciting games where he got the best out of all of our lads leading to our 4th highest ever finish - and arguably due to the imbalance of the money in football is probably our 2nd greatest achievement. But aye, the style.
Also if we were allowed into the ground,we would have been out of our seats much more than the seasons following his exit.
So being in the relegation zone for pretty much the entire season and being saved by a points deduction is getting the most out of them and the bloke who got them to the playoffs after taking over in a poor position the next season is *****?
Some poor takes in here. Val gave us the biggest lift during bleak times. It was a pleasure to tune into IFollow every week when we could barely leave our own homes. The football was entertaining, high pressing, & teams couldn’t deal with us, just cast your minds back to that Bournemouth game! Unfortunately some managers resorted to hoofball to try & cope with us. Sometimes it worked other times it didn’t. Steve Cooper seemed to have Vals number unfortunately, but the optimism was back, after a **** season the season before, well before it got paused. But then in good old Barnsley fashion we went & cocked it all up & still recovering. If ever we go up again, I would love Val back.
They’d only played a handful of matches & everyone knew he was leaving, it was a case of sorting compensation out. I don’t think that was any reflection on Struber as a manager
I'd argue that it's all relative. Val took over a side that had survived relegation on the final day and a club that was tiny compared to the financial muscle of the rest of the division. Bassett had players that had performed consistency at this level (and higher) already, apart from when he played Keith Brown for some reason. And only 2 years prior, we were in the Premier League. Edit: this isn't a knock on Bassett btw, that was an unreal season too.
Believe me I was no great fan of Struber, but from where we were when he came in he did garnish enough points so that the points deduction counted for something. As for Val he unquestionably had a great season here but I didn’t like that style of football and certainly wouldn’t wish him back
