Me too, playing the way we did with people in Oakwell, I think the atmosphere wouldn't have been great. It was a struggle for me watching on iFollow, I was getting sick of shouting at the telly after every aimless punt up the field... The lack of crowds helped him enormously.
You’ve got to give Val a lot of credit for getting outstanding performances out of Dike & Morris straight away. Loads of our best players during my time watching us play don’t even start really performing until their second seasons with us. These two went straight in & looked perfect fits for us. You’ve got to give credit for that especially Dike who had never played outside the US.
Hunter got us playing great stuff, but for me it all started with Allan Clarke, he revolutionised the club, made us into a professional outfit with an ambition to go up the leagues and not yo-yo between division 3 and division 4. Clarke also had the effect of getting the town behind the club and suddenly loads more fans wanted to come down to Oakwell. Both ex Leeds players did great but Clarke was definitely the catalyst for me. He probably left a season too early in hindsight because at the time he looked like he could go on and be as successful as a certain ‘Brian Clough’, I thought he had similar management styles and skills during his first stint here.
Under Val? hmmmm, I’m inclined to think winning football matches most weeks might have generated a pretty decent atmosphere. It was hi octane stuff under him. I think the atmosphere would have been brilliant personally.
He laid the foundations. Hunter took us to another level, with the great cup run and playing teams off the field with great style. I loved watching the reds under Hunter.
Don't disagree mate. Just think the football under norm was so special. As an aside. I think I read somewhere that Allan Clarke was mentioned by Clough as one of the only ones who didn't kick off against him. During that short stint..
It's probably hard to understand if you weren't there how great they were as a Barnsley fan mate as you say. My mate a Wendy. Dreaded Glavin being in the team. Even when he came off the bench in one of the games at the sty.
I meant Covid came to Strubers rescue, we were well and truly down if we'd finished the season without the break
Totally agree with earlier comments with what Val had available, what he achieved was remarkable. It relied on young players with young players' stamina but it's what he had. However I do thing teams had worked them out.
Totally agree, Was the best team I've ever seen under Norman. Was a different time though, just before the strike & 10 / 15 years before the money came in. Glad I saw it. One of the good things about being old. Sciatica & memory loss are the downsides I guess, but happy I'll forget the Lincoln match fairly soon is a bonus.
