Sounds fantastic, pity Carlisle is in the back of beyond....

If we had a pub like that anywhere near me I'd probably be in there 3 or 4 times a week. Instead we have an awful Weatherspoons that charges similar sums for a pint, or other nicer ones which charge double (or more) than that for generally poor beers.

A friend of mine was Humphrey's chauffeur at one time, he often had to pick him up in the early hours and take him on a tour of pubs where he'd go through the wheelie bins in his suit looking for evidence of landlords buying stock from elsewhere. He took him to one pub and he wanted the manager to explain to him why his pub was above average in toilet roll use, jokingly the manager said ' I'd use a lot less if I wasn't selling your beer'... Humphrey sacked him.

When living in Barnsley, frequented the Sam Smith's pub in Higham, Engineers Arms. Great dart board and pool table plus an excellent pint. You could try it out but perhaps without your phone.

Quite a few of us went in there. (around 35) . In from 5:30 - 6:15. Then went to rugby club. To meet up with Arabian Ian.
Sam's sell all their own brands. Brown bear in Sheffield one of our old haunts. I think it's still open..

You can't use your mobile phone, tablet, or laptop, no music and if you swearing audibly you'll be asked to leave. Opening and closing hrs are strictly adhered to. Get there in time afore the shutters go down.
    Absolutely love Taddy's lager.

I think the nearest to me is/was in Derby near the river to the north of the city, in an old monastery building (The Abbey, sadly closed now). Been a couple of times but its a good 15 miles from us, so not staggering distance. I liked the Swan and 3 Cygnets in Durham City centre.

Brilliant idea. There is enough pubs and bars for people wanting to watch TV, be ignorant on their phone every 2 seconds and listen to music.

    **** beers, **** pubs, owned by a **** owner.

I've dealt with him in a professional capacity, difficult to say the least. I'll say no more.

I tend to avoid them based on how Humphry Smith treats tenant landlords (seems to have a lot of employment tribunals over the years), customers, the ridiculous policies in his pubs, and the sale of only their own Rola Cola style diet coke drink, which is awful (if Im driving I don't want to drink that crap), the fact that Humphry Smith has a reputation around Tadcaster and York where he owns a lot of property as being a bit of a bell end. When the bridge in Tadcaster that connects both half of the town was lost in the Boxing Day floods of 2015 they wanted to put a temporary pedestrian bridge up but needed to site it on some disused land he owned. He refused.

Joe Lycett did a good piece which gives a flavour

I did laugh at this thread about him though on Reddit:

So I visited my local Samuel Smith's pub last night after waking from a 12 (which ended up being a 13) hour night shift. I went with my girlfriend and parents to have a pop at the brutally hard quiz.

Midway through the quiz old Humphrey, the boss of the brewery, walks in for a flying visit (the first and hopefully last time I see him).

Humphrey, angrily: It is quarter past 11. Can you please explain to me why you are still serving alcohol?

Landlady, bemused: ..... It's..... It's quarter past 10. Did you put your clock back?

Mr Humphrey proceeds to storm out.

Spent a lovely couple of hours in the princess Louise last month, although expensive it’s a excellent pub

Tried a couple in another Sam Smith’s pub last weekend, The Plough Inn Whitby

The Organic lager they sell is well worth a try

I could be wrong, but I don't think Humphrey has any children, I think the next in line may be a nephew. There was a site I used to go on called samsmiths.info that was a site used by disgruntled employees etc to air their grievances... Humphrey went to court to get it shut down but failed. On seeing this thread I had a look for it but it seems to have moved to X Twitter which I'm not on.

When my brother and I used to do crawls in London, either when we both lived there, or now when we visit, we would pop into one on Marylebone high street.

On my recent visits, we have stayed overnight in Richmond upon Thames on the night before I fly back, as it's an easy run to Heathrow the next morning.

We always pop into one on the banks of the Thames, which has the atmosphere, and as many living things, as a morgue.

Humphrey Smith is an absolute buffon he doesn't care about his managers or staff the sooner he's out the better
