Bit weird 3 weeks out from the season getting rid off the MD of cricket. Seemed an odd appointment in the first place, more for his contacts and media profile rather than his experience for the role. Wonder if Graves can convince Moxon to come back, or get Dizzy back from Aus? https://yorkshireccc.com/news/darren-gough-steps-down-from-role-as-managing-director-of-cricket/
Excellent decision, but should have been done months ago. Excellent as a player, but that shouldn't mask how terrible he was as MD. We didn't progress on the pitch, failed to get promoted, relied on too many short term signings and he still did commentary on games when he should have been working on his day job.
His biggest failure was the signings. As you say in particular the short term signings seemed strange without any real thought about their availability for different codes.
I'm guessing he's resigned following the stinging criticism he got from ex physio Wayne Morton, who was one of those sacked in the fallout from the racism scandal. Morton was very critical of Gough and his decision to side with the club. Morton got a big out of court settlement payout from Yorkshire a few weeks back...
300k a year saved! Thanks for providing some good news and stability when we needed it most, I don't think he did a great job - but in a way that's not the point. He showed faith in the club and kept us going when we need it most. Very sensible decision all round - and how good and rare to see someone leaving the club on good terms for once! No rush to replace him - Otis can carry on in the meantime. I'd like to see less short term signings and more long term strategic planning now, we’ve got sone great youngsters... Lets hope Colin doesn't bring back Moxon though or we really will disappear down a rabbit hole...
Just read the Yorkshire Post article - goodness me, Gough getting paid more than Championship winning Surrey MD Alec Stewart!
