No but I hope it becomes a more regular occurance. They're strange birds, really common in some areas of the country and totally absent from others - rarely an in-between.
I love to see them but there’s not many here, east of York. When I lived in Princes Risborough though they flew mob-handed over the town. A dozen and more was not uncommon
Last summer I went up onto the Langsett moors and camped out wild. I took some cooked chicken drumsticks (and a couple of vats of red wine) for my evening meal. After pitching I settled down to eat. Soon a red kite started circling round. It got braver and started swooping, obviously keen on my drumsticks. I had great fun chucking bits of chicken in the air, the kite managed to snatch some in mid air, the rest on the ground. A great experience.
Down here (vale of glamorgan) there quite a good many of them, I see them regularly they are fantastic to see
See loads round here (outskirts of Harrogate/Ripon), a few owls too. Had an owl really low flying (about 2m off ground) just 5m in front of me for a good 100m when I was out running during last week.
Crows bully Red Kites as they compete for the same food, carion. I often see kites defending themselves from crows in the sky above Didcot.
Strange that from top side of Leeds to just south of Sheffield is virtually free of Kites but they seem to be moving in to this area now..lvly to watch
See loads out and about, hundreds near Harewood house and then out Tadcaster way, just seen a couple between Chesterfield and Sheffield ( A61 top of Dronfield).
Loads of them in Harrogate. I often see more than 20 at a time. If we have chicken for Sunday dinner I put the carcass on the shed roof and they swoop down for it. They also sit in the trees on within the back gardens on our street calling each other. Beautiful creatures.
