Seems that April 3rd 1987 Stuart Gray and Roger Wylde helped us to a 2-0 win over Reading at Oakwell in the 2nd tier.

Even a 'massive' pull like WBA v Sunderland didn't break 7,000

Also see the goalscorers for Huddersfield and Blackburn Rovers were Duncan Shearer and Simon Barker who I recall always scoring whenever they played us.

 

I’m a member of this group and there are regular posts showing the scores and scorers. It’s interesting for me that I can see lists of games even back to the 60s and recognise the names of the scorers in most teams.

Not so these days though with the leagues full of foreign imports.

Post-miners strike of '84. Crowds didn't really recover until promotion season of 96-97

 

I think the Oxford home game in 96/7 was just above 6000 , remember going to Southend away that season and there was less than 5000

 

Amazing how low crowds were generally back then. I see Sheff Utd only had 7.5k. Ours were still suffering from the effects of the miners strike.

 

Yes, and conversely, look at the years 80-83, other clubs were still in the doldrums and we were about the only club in the country bucking the trend.

Hence why it was not only the football under Clark and Hunter, but the crowds and atmosphere generated, that make such good memories.

 

It took 10 years for attendances to recover from the pit strike.

I was at that game, Stuart Gray was my favourite player in that team.

I always rated him, but the BBS thought he was rubbish and tried to ridicule me on here when I posted about him.

 

These games were played on a Friday, that most likely affected attendances, does anybody know why? It wasn't easter I've checked

 

Stuart Gray was a great player, probably the most versatile player we've had too. Can recall him playing for us at left back, centre half, left midfield, centre midfield and upfront.

 

I was amazed how long he was at Oakwell to be honest, top quality player.

 

Another of that band of exceptional players that we’ve been lucky to have over the years. This is why I don’t react too much when good players move on. There’s always a couple of even better ones down the line to take their place.

 

Only the Brighton game was played Friday.

Probably a lot of dead rubber games, had the play offs been introduced then? Can't be arsed to research....

 

No, don’t think the play offs came until a year or two later.

 

It was the first play-off season - Charlton (finished 19th in Division 1) beat Leeds to retain their top tier status.

Speaking of Leeds, that Andy RItchie looks like be might have had a future in the game. Wonder what happened to him...?
