Maybe but I still massively struggle with how it can be 85% cheaper to travel 1 stop further on the same train.

Train prices are a mess. Denby Dale to Penistone £4.30 anytime single. Denby Dale to Huddersfield via Shepley, Stocksmoor, Brockholes, Honley, Berry Brow and Lockwood £4.50 anytime single.

You get penalised from stepping from West Yorkshire to South Yorkshire.

Found flights to San Fran from Heathrow, if I got shuttle flight from Manchester to Heathrow it was 100 quid cheaper, British Airways.
    Don't know why that worked.

Yeah. That confuses me too. Although at times it can also be cheaper to split your ticket and buy two (or more) for the exact same train than 1 ticket. And different train times vary the price for the same journey. Its a mess.

That's a loss leader. They take a loss on the Manchester leg and less profit on the Heathrow leg to guarantee selling a seat (or several seats) on the flight. Airlines do it all the time.

I'm going to Seoul (then Japan) in June - its cheaper to fly from Manchester via Helsinki than it is to fly direct from Heathrow. Its also cheaper to fly back from Tokyo to Seoul then Helsinki than it is to fly direct from Tokyo.

They are shocking - would cost me 41 pound on a train to get to Leeds yet I can get the same journey on National Express for 15 pound. Very often the trains are overcrowded so you aren't even guaranteed a seat for that price.

Had to stand from Sheffield to Burton last Monday and also for the return journey. Joke of a service.

We went to see Peter Kay last month and had to stand on the train from Liverpool to Manchester and train was overcrowded coming back ... appalling. I'd rather travel an hour more on the coach- cheaper and you are guaranteed a seat!!!

I’ve come down to London today with mi lad, going to game tomorrow.
Friend's & family rail card used. only £78 return for us both & somehow managed to dodge the strike action.
it’d cost a lot more in petrol & bloody parking costs in the car.
Have to agree tho, train travel costs seem to be so varied in value for money.
I’m happy at just less than £20 each way per person & I only booked them this week!
