Must admit though I looked at Jalos goal and I am not as convinced he was on as some are suggesting, but hard to be sure from the one camera angle but he does look marginally off to me #43 could be playing him on but I am not certain

Thinking they both might be just about correct decisions. On the May still the ball has already left the foot so you'd have to take it from a couple of frames earlier, so perhaps he was level.

Conversely, on the Jalo still, the ball isn't yet being struck yet so it needs rolling on a few frames, so probably offside.

Dont have really the resolution but if you go back a frame on the May one he still looks off thats before the ball is struck. also the ball has only just left the boot you cant get much closer. The Jalo one doesnt change much as both he and #45 are running flat out in the same direction. Both pictures were as close as I could get to the actual impact point on the ball

Fair enough. They both still look about right to me though. Marginal, and the margins have gone against us.

You can't help but admit it was poor defending.
In all the yrs watching the reds this as to be up there in the worst back 3 since theold 4th division days.
We have always had good uns at the bk ,I cant pick a stand out back 4 player in the squad.
This as to be addressed in the new season .

The ball was passed on to May by our worse than woeful number 6. What on earth was the truly awful French 'defender' doing? That's at least 10 goal-scoring opportunities gifted by him in the last six and a bit games alone.

More a philosophical question. If an attacker who is not interfering with play cannot be offside, why can a defender who is not interfering with play play an attacker onside?

I'm a bit lost here as May looks onside.

Usually with offside decisions the camera angle of the still or video clip makes it difficult to judge which player is further forward, the attacker or the defender. Rarely is the viewing perspective exactly in line with the last defender. But here that doesn't matter as we have the extremely convenient 18 yard line. Both defender and attacker have their foot up to the line but not beyond it. As such we can see they're level and so May is onside. May's arm is stuck out, but arms aren't considered for the purpose of determining an offside. When I watched the highlights I thought there was a suspicion of offside, but this just confirms he wasn't.

But May is leaning forwards as that's the direction he is running in but the defender is standing straight I would sat Mays shoulder is just inside the box though its impossible from this angle to be certain.
One thing I will say though both decisions were extremely close and its hard to really have too much a go at the linesman without the benefit of VAR both could have gone either way, just annoying both went against us. Unlike the ref on the Cole penalty not given when just about everyone said Penalty at the time and its clear from the replay that it should have been

May was offside when the ball was played forward.

    Why I don't think he's offside.
I've taken a still from when he actually releases the ball instead of a frame later to give a more accurate representation and as you can see from the second image I've circled both players feet which imo clearly shows the defender is visibly closer to the 18 yard line than the attacker. Yes I know there is then a debate about leaning and shoulders etc but there doesn't appear to be a ridiculous lean from May and remember his arm doesn't count. I don't think any slight lean in body compensates for the pretty clear difference in feet position. Feet alone I'd say he's half a yard onside. Is he leaning over by half a yard? I don't think so personally.

Also with regards the Jalo goal I have absolutely no idea how our manager has come to the conclusion that "Fabio Jalo was a yard on side. The opposite wing-back is about a yard behind" as he is quoted as saying. The evidence simply does not agree with his claim.

Again I've taken the still from the moment the ball is released not the frame after when it's in flight (I've included the player releasing the ball) and in the second image I have highlighted what I think shows he is offside. We know that due to angles etc it's not easy to use the lines on the pitch to accurately assess offside but I believe that if you look at the blue lines I've drawn it shows that Jalo is a good 4/5ths of the way to the left of the darker green section while the defender is only around 2/3rds of the way. Regardless of perspective you would expect them both to be roughly the same percentage across the darker section in order to be in line with each other and in my opinion its pretty clear that they are not. Jalo is noticeably further across than the defender and therefore offside
