SSN going on about Liverpool/Man U being the most important derby in the country.
I always thought Liverpool’s derby was v Everton. And Man U v Man C was the derby.
    Can anyone enlighten me?
Seems like saying Barnsley’s Derby is v Burnley as they sound like each other.

For a derby you've to be from the same county. Ipswich and Norwich think they play a derby.

I might be wrong here but I believe I once heard that Crystal Palace and Brighton is some sort of Derby. Are they in the same county?

No that's hated that goes back a few decades. They see it as the Gull derby because it's Seagulls vs Eagles.

Of course it's a Derby, fiercely contested for decades as is Forest v Derby.

    40+ miles apart

    South Wales derby

The South Wales derby is a local derby between Welsh association football clubs Cardiff City and Swansea City. Bluebirds v Swans (or Jacks.)

The fixture has been described by The Independent as one of the fiercest rivalries in British football.
    Tidy!

I don't think County has a bearing on it tbf.. Ipswich and Norwich are only 40 miles apart with no other similar clubs between them... rather like Newcastle and Sunderland.

The most competitive matches in any league are often 'Derby' matches. A 'derby' is a match between local rivals. i.e. teams that are from the same city or the same part of the country. These local games have a special place in the hearts of fans and players.

Barnsley v Huddersfied is classed as a Derby. Local rivals. As near as Donny.
Norwich v Ipswich same part of country.
Closest other league club to Norwich = Ipswich
Closest to Ipswich. = Colchester. (Essex) Hardly local rivals.

By your reckoning (same county) neither (Norfolk v Suffolk) would play a Derby.

Liverpool v man utd. Is quite local and given a lot of
Rivalry re history. As in top dogs. Also known as a North west Derby.

Hardly rivals though mate. I think that's the point being made.

Not many more between Meadow Lane and City Ground. Yet if you asked Forest fans who they would rather beat, Notts or Derby, the vast majority would instantly reply, Derby.

The thread is titled when is a derby not a derby? Rivals not mentioned in the original post.

Explanation of the term Derby is though mate. It's not straightforward I admit. The first paragraph of my first post. Is what I picked up on an explanation on Google. not summat I thought of myself, I just copied it.

Based purely on mileage of nearest, it would be Rotherham and/or Wendy for us.

I'd say the vast majority of fixtures quoted above are widely considered as derbies.

A derby is between local teams, what they're getting it confused with is a rivalry.
