Just come across this still of Reading's first goal. How on earth can we get ourselves in the situation where three Reading players are queueing up to head it in?
And the very negative tactic of leaving no one on the half way line. How do you counter attack quickly?
Yes I spotted that on the highlights, no Barnsley player close to making a challenge. Very poor defending. You could argue that Earl (?) gets blocked by a Reading player but where were the rest? Stood watching by the looks of it.
I hate this tactic, it only causes confusion in a packed out box. However, it is a tactic that at least 3 or 4 of our previous head coaches have used.
Defending from corners ......... What a fantastic idea. If we give it a try last 3 games we could well be ready for the play-offs.
More like zonal gazing - skywards as yet another opponent gets a free header. Free kick organization seems little better. This ought to be basic stuff.
A lot of criticism about our tactics defending corners here. While poor, this was actually only the 4th corner we’ve conceded this season.
From the video clip, Jon Russell is standing, just out of shot, to the right of the three Reading players. All 6 foot 5 ins of him. It was really weak defending from all of them.
That’s as maybe, but we give away a lot of free headers from corners and set-pieces. The fact that most of them don’t result in a goal doesn’t hide the problem
I’m surprised at the stat for the small number of goals we’ve conceded from corners because whether it’s corners or crosses coming into our box, we rarely seem to win the header. Balls getting pumped up the pitch, our centre backs win their fair share I’d say but when it’s balls into the box, we seem to win far fewer.
