The answer is simple. Another season in League one with the board backing the manager who ever it may be with experienced League one Players, If we want promotion we have to do this , some how we have got very close on a Shoestring If we want to really achieve success everyone at the Club needs to be going for it.
That will not happen.over the summer we will sell the better quality players and replace them with academy and lower league & overseas rubbisn. New unheard of manager from some far flung shore. A mid 8 table finish at best in next seasons league one with a big flirt with the relegation zone. A lonnnnnng and unhappy season beckons next term
Not the complete answer but part of it has to be to stop the nonsense that is zonal marking from corners and other dead ball situations. How many goals do we have to concede from free headers for it to become obvious it doesn’t work - and we’ve been doing it for a number of years now. Men jumping static -v- men running in and jumping with momentum - not difficult to see who has the edge. Probably the method coached on every coaching course these days so it must be the way to do it.
I think it's time to accept we mainly have a squad of league 1 player's with at best a league 1 coach. The work and more importantly the investment that's needed to compete at the very top of this league is huge. The prospect of trying to do that job if by a act of god we get to the championship is frightening.
When we do get back to the championship and by the way it’s taken Portsmouth 12 years we need to have players who can make the step, don’t see many in our squad at the moment the board have to accept they have played a part in this if we fail this season
We don’t have enough match winners, the teams at the top do. We need to make sure recruitment in summer is aimed at attacking intent and on the front foot. Plenty of players we can afford who have that ability. Let’s not scattergun but recruit with a purpose of on field productivity rather than off-field. Getting a fairly experienced midfielder can always be partnered with someone who is younger. That can also happen up top and in defence.
Tbh I thought we showed tonight that we can give the best in the division a really good game, we showed a lot more energy and positivity and moved the ball a lot more quickly. Where we go wrong for me is trying to introduce more defenders, we needed fresh legs but in midfield and up front to stop them getting close and to exploit them when they were pushing forwards.
Pompey rested 5 players from the Bolton game. We have a habit of conceding from set plays. On the whole it was a good performance but the defence is well off it. Conceding 2 and 3 goals a game is no good and now 1 win in 7.
Is thev op's question ...what is the answer to getting results....or just in general? Imho if its getting results now with this squad ...its pretty obvious, we have to play like last night but cut out this seasons Achilles heel...stop making defensive errors....every match. Now because I think its too late to do that and we can't trust our defence, I would say we need to ask more of our strikers and midfield....press more when we don't have it and move it quicker when we do. Last night I saw us move it a lot quicker and it caused pompy problems (it will most teams). We did seem quicker in transition and looked so much better for it. So we can do it...it was a good test and I believe we matched them 90% of the game. Our frailties lie in our subs and have all season...again last night they make changes and finish well....we make changes and look weaker. To compete the same way,at fratton park, in our last two games, I believe will get us in the play offs. I still believe this summers recruitment is vital...hope we get it right this time.
If we lose to Blackpool and other results go against us, it wouldn't be a complete shock if Collins was let go. We are 21st in the form table and if we don't go up the owners will have to pump a lot more in to the club than if we did go up. So based on form and hopefully four more games to go, they would have to decide if they trust him.
Absolutely the recruitment in the summer was dire most of what we drought in is on loan at a lower level and most aren't pulling up any trees. There is a massive rebuild to be done is Collins's the right man to be part of that job I'm not sure and if proper investment isn't forthcoming it will be more than 12yrs before we get out of this league. I would love us to go and compete at championship level but other than that freak lockdown season when was it not just a constant struggle the days of us been a genuine championship club are behind us
