Where did the money go? (Not rhetorical: I really don't know) I recall something being said about transfer receipts being reinvested 100% in the team. Did this happen? Supplementary question: should we entirely dismantle the current recruitment operation and re-model it along the lines of how we operated prior to recruiting the 1996-97 or 2015-16 squads? Can we not learn from our previous successes? Some experience is vital, because at times last night it resembled men against boys. Third one: doesn't building a successful team always start from building a solid defence? We serially flog our best defenders, but - which is worse - serially fail to replace them with players of similar quality.
Didn’t we have a £7m hole to fill in the accounts? the bigger concern is this year - we’ve run out of assets to flog…. Ps they said club not team
Didn't we sell Andersen for 3 million and Kitching for 5? How on earth do we persuade players worth that and of that quality to come to a 3rd division club? It can't be done. That said we need to be thinking more along the lines of the Winnall type acquisition than the Dallas and Shaw ones in key positions this summer plus, as others have said, a little bit of know how and experience.
Said many times and I still believe the principal of identifying players, buying, developing and then selling is right for a club of our size. The issue has and still is the implementation of a pipeline it just does not exist. We buy a player, throw them in the deep end, eventually get up to speed and we sell. The board really needs to look at this for the short and long term and do 2 main things to rectify. 1) Buy some plug and play players to ‘prime the pump’ AND players who will be ready to play in 1-2 Seasons. 2) Look at our record of developing players as it is not successful enough, the players who are not involved in the first team don’t tend to breakthrough. Appreciate it will need some initial investment but done right it would be a one off hit and over a few years would be more cost effective and even maybe get the money back.
true. The account hole is an interesting one. I always wonder why the club complains when we get relegated that we lose 6m yet they wont spend 2 to keep us up. Following their logic we would then be 4m better off.
The statement they made was that no money would come out of the club and transfer fees would be reinvested in players and player contracts. That broadly translates to we will use transfer profits to keep the club running. In 22/23 the operating loss was £5.9m, player sales reduced this to £4m. Reinvesting in the club means using transfer money and Director equity injections to keep the club afloat. The proceeds from Andersen and Kitching will offset this years losses but next year will mean either swinging wage cuts or around £5m from the owners again.
Much more eloquently put than me. we are not in a good place at all. Emphasises the point that you need to get back up quickly or face a very steep mountain to climb to get promoted.
Collins was also transferred out. Also a percentage of Jacob Brown move from Stoke to Luton. We got money for Stones winning champions league. As well as money for Duff to Swansea.
Yep we had a few quid in the last 12 months I know we had to pay off the likes of iseka and oulare but surely they must have been some left and we haven't spanked it all. Will we have made anything on the play offs last season?
Additionally, we'll only have received a proportion of their transfer fees so far, as they're typically paid in instalments. 50% on transfer with 50% after 12 months was the most usual agreement I recall, but that might have evolved over time. As you point out, the Andersen and Kitching transfers hadn't happened at the point of the latest filed accounts, so we'll see their benefit in the next published accounts when they're filed in February. Those thinking we've been sat on a pile of funds all season, which some of the Twitter keyboard warriors seem to be, seem to be oblivious to actual reality.
Presumably, player salaries are the biggest item of expenditure? But the implication of your helpful explanation is that we are paying salaries which can only be afforded by resort to transfer fees received, in the absence of which owners' cash injections make up any shortfall? It doesn't appear to be a very sound business model, given that transfer receipts are an unpredictable source of income? The only way to make it sound would seem to be to further reduce player salaries, which must further diminish the quality of the squad? I suppose the alternative is that we 'get lucky' and achieve promotion, but then we operate on a higher level of unprofitability. You paint a gloomy picture!
Neerav indicated the some of our big sales are being paid in long term installments so it is hard to utilise the money. Not sure we can't sign folk using similar installment methods unless we have turned into such a soft touch that clubs demand we pay up front. We need serious tweaks to the spreadsheet, and after seeing marginal improvements in the sums we get for players we need to be far more aggressive in the purchasing department. This summer, there can be no more Dallas and Shaw type signings and even if we are able to develop Shep I don't think we should shop further in non-league unless budget dictates we can recruit purely for the development squad. On the subject of Shaw and Dallas, I lose sleep pondering the process that must have occurred to identify, recruit and actually pay these two players. Following the Aitchison debacle, have we been identified by the Scottish footballing fraternity as being a soft touch club who will actually pay you a decent wage whilst simultaneously listening to your sudden homesickness demands? Shaw might start for us next August having not set foot on a match day pitch for 12 months. Shudder.
Im pretty sure Neerev stated in one of the fan forums that of the reported £8million incoming ....we only received £1 million at the start of the season... the rest in installments.
transfers out though are the same as transfers in as in paid in instalments. Football in general just operates a crazy financial model
Massively agree...I remember stating my concerns on this board at the start of the season. I was greeted by some who told me they would be squad players, not all first team and to show some faith etc. I don't have any problem signing non league players and players from lower leagues.....what I do have an issue with is chucking them all into the first team straightaway and expecting them to be competent at this level ...its too much.
