If the club want to go down the Austrian high press style - as they clearly did with Thalhammer.

Why not at least try for Struber or Ismael??

Same reason why clubs try to find the next Messi and not buy the current one.

Wouldn’t mind us trying for Pete Wild at Barrow. Done really well with them, plays an expressive football and suits the whole recruitment policy with what he’s done there. A young coach as well.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if we have Leam Richardson on our list despite last year at Rotherham. Did well at Wigan beforehand in this league.

Unless Barrow have got owners pumping money in they've done exceptionally well the last few years. I remember reading their manager played an expansive type of football but I think it was possession based. Well worth a look though.

Because that'd be utilising far too much common sense. Why go after Val, who is available, plays the style the board want, and would unite the fans, when we can whip the spreadsheet up and get an Austrian third tier former PE teacher who has a YouTube channel about left back pressing?

What makes you think Val would unite the fans?

What makes anyone think Val* would want to come back?!?

    * see also Stendel, Struber, Duff, Heckingbottom etc etc. Why is there this assumption we could just go out and select who we wanted to manage us. Club without a pot to pi** in and a reputation for not investing and letting the manager have free rein over recruitment & development.

Interesting conversation just now with a colleague - knows someone on their coaching staff. Club apparently released half their promising players within hours of missing out on the playoffs. Manager not involved in the decision and is unhappy to say the least.

You can get 33/1 on him. Might have 50p on it just to see if the odds move....

Why wouldn't he? I seem to remember him having a great spell at our club.

Fair enough, he might not want to come. But if you're wanting to galvanise a club, there are worse option. Like Austrian PE teachers.

We’re a division lower with worse players and a smaller budget for starters. He’d have to take a huge drop in wages from what he’s now used to. I think he’d have to be desperate.

I agree. Only 3 years ago we had all of Collins, Helik, Andersen, Mowatt, an in-form Styles, Morris, Chaplin, Dike, Woodrow. Compare that to the squad a new head coach is going to inherit. It's hard to believe we can assemble a squad remotely as good as that which Ismael had any time soon, if ever again.

It's the fans who would want convincing. Even though he got decent results his style of play was disliked by some and that's why I am not sure you would get the unity you are looking for.

Could be wrong, but there are probably people on coaching staff of other clubs that are on more money than our managers.

Someone as motivational as Val could probably pick up a job at a higher placed club and earn more brass. Management isn’t his only option and who’s to say he’s not currently in a job in some capacity?

Disliked by me. Not interested in long ball, no matter who's the coach.. Anyhow, Val will be looking for something out of our price range.

Errr... isnt it a notorious fact amongst barnsley fans that Vals football is the exact opposite of what the board want? Apparently they also want nice, controlled, fluid football too!
