Thanks, I called home and other than not being able to get off the estate and therefore my dad not being able to go to work, they were unaffected.

"The old mining tunnels"; is this an episode of Scooby Do being filmed in Grimethorpe?

Turns out he dug the tunnels himself. Luckily no body was found, which is good

The baddies would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those pesky, meddling bomb disposal people

I grew up in Grimey, a white city lad, and am immensely proud of doing so. I spent years roaming the fields and woodlands, getting into scrapes and scraps, fishing in the beck for sticklebacks, ponds for newts and frogs, climbing the monkey tree with no thoughts of safety. Seeing the men off to work at the pits, passing the working men's clubs with the warm waft of beer and tobacco drifting out. A tough village, a coal mucky village, but one which formed characters of comradeship, respect for others, and self reliance.
As a poster said, the witch Thatcher has a lot to answer for.
Yes things have changed, like many places it is a drug addled wasteland of broken futures now, but I do not regret one second of living there

My mate lives in Grimey, on a newish estate behind the old hall. It’s a lovely spot. Must say it seems to have improved over the last 10 or 15 years with all the newbuilds going up.

Hang on. How long ago did Jamdrop leave? Must be about 15 years. Can't be a coincidence

Great post mate. People have been taking the pi.ss a bit on here and I suspect its not all tongue in cheek. Doesn't matter where you live. There's a history to everywhere and good folk and arseholes inhabit all spaces. There was a Tory recently who called Stockton on Tees a 'shi.thole' and that sums up the snobby, dismissive crap that some morons tend to assume about Grimethorpe too.
N.B. I say all this as someone from Darton, which as we all know is a cultural oasis and blessed with lovely folk like me...:)

18 years now. Next year, I’ll have lived here longer than I did there. That’s such a weird thought.
