I can't think of a single difference which is why it seems odd to my confused little brain. What made them change the job title when we only have one sport? Must have been something and it bugs me that I don't know what
https://www.premierleague.com/news/3991780 I think it’s just convention is shifting towards the title according to this article. Some people we (or certainly I) think of listed here as DoFs do not have that title.
Do you think the new guy here is? Because the football at the time of his joining didn't change from the football we played pre-signing. What are you on about? I'm honestly astonished we are critical about a staff member before hes even had time to implement anything with his first transfer window and in relatively short amount of time. Baffling
We often hear that football clubs are run on a different basis to normal business and it appears that virtually all clubs are in debt. Managed debt is a part of most business but must be controlled. I won't repeat the failures listed in the above posts where the club have lost money but do agree that every little helps. one thing that I post regularly is the waste of funds on "Punts" yet we were inches from doing it again with Mr Warhammer, add to this the Dallas/ Shaw fiasco plus were still paying Lopata and Shepard (Who may come back) and surely we paid compensation to Collins and it starts to add up. Most of this board were around at the time of Iseka and Oulare which cost god knows how much but then made Watters supposedly one of our highest earners. The solution it appears is to pay more money out for a DOF. Obviously we as the public are not party to the whole running costs of the club but surely a start is tighter control of funds. I am not a " Throw money at it" supporter but more if a spend it wisely fan. Smaller squad with budget used on better quality, Opportunities to make money like shirt and kit sales maximised from the word go, food and drink sales which is a mega earner for most hospitality outlets run efficiently. I've no doubt there will be other areas. At least we finally sold players for decent cash last time.
you've totally bypassed the question I asked, you stated most successful clubs have a DOF to which I asked 2 of the most successful in Liverpool and City do you think Pep and Jurgen are following a blueprint to set up their teams? Is it not in the remit for Mladen then to create and implement a playing model and coaching ideology which ultimately transpires to the pitch?
Because the sporting director works with the head coach to create a playing identity, I expect Liverpool and Man City when the time comes to allow their sporting director to appoint a new manager that fits the implemented model. I think we’re a little further back in the process given that we haven’t won a champions league in the last 5 years.
Those 2 clubs were examples at the top of the tree, if you look at L1 then I certainly wouldn't expect Barry Fry (DOF) to be telling Darren Ferguson that he'll be playing xyz formation
SD will have a wider range of responsibilities than a DoF. As an example a SD typically would cover all aspects of the sporting side of the club (football in our case), where a DoF would be more specifically on and around the first team.
Pep & Txiki 100% work together and is regularly reported that Txiki makes sure all teams at every level in the club play to the same style. That said it will be more a case of they share the same philosophy than Pep being dictated to. Klopp didn’t work with a DoF, the guy appointed was appointed as a result of Klopp leaving and the club wanting to go down the DoF route.
Have Pep and Klopp full autonomy on the pitch? So let's say city are away at utd and Pep wants to change it up and suprise utd, you know the outcome as you alluded to Pep is the driving force and has created the system. We couldn't change anything last season mainly because we've recruited to a single system giving us little alternatives, we're now embarking on a journey that solidifies that approach, 1 system, 1 approach
Surely to make the most of our meagre funds, we determine a system and a style of play, then recruit a first choice player and a back up for each position to stop us going back to the days when we signed 4 right backs or before that 4 number 10s and then had to play them out of position? Jurgen Klopp has played 4-3-3 since he arrived at Liverpool apart from a very brief period where he experimented with 4-2-3-1, which could be argued is the same formation dependent on the roles individuals take in the tactics. Pep has been a bit more visionary by now playing 3-1-3-3 and he doesn’t have full backs/wing backs at all, because when the ball goes wide a Cb moves to full back and Rodri/Stones drops in to make a 4 from the CDM position. Recruiting players for a formation or to suit a particular style of football doesn’t mean the manager can’t change tactics on the pitch. No one is telling. Ahead coach not to allow the wing backs to get forward and put in early crosses, and no one is telling coaches they can’t adapt their formation to suit a particular game. We saw Neill play a weird 5-4-1 and in some games play 3-1-4-2, some games 3-4-1-2, some games 3-4-2-1. Surely no one believes that?
I saw changes in formation similar to that. Definitely changes in the way the midfield was set up - case in point being the game where we came from behind to win 2-1 at Oakwell when Phillips was pushed further forward and grabbed both goals (Cheltenham or Orient maybe?). A lot of people seem to think it was just 352 rigidly every game for the full 90.
Sacking a manager while in the playoffs is no way to stabilise a club.Collins in my view should have had another season in charge which would have gave him a full pre season and a chance to strengthen. If we sack the next manager because we don't go up straight away all stability has gone out the window.
Sensible post I agree, whilst the football was dire at times, mainly just due to the opposition doing a number on us, with tools he had all things considered he over performed getting us into the playoffs with that squad. Had the home/away form been the opposite he'd probably still be in a job. We haven't started a season with the same head coach in 5 years, that can't be good for anyone
What if the better quality players within our budget can't fit into the system, do we let potential rivals sign them and we just keep putting square pegs in round holes like the Jordan Williams situation, sacrificing the best wing back at the club to continue playing a back 3. I said three days before the 1st leg Vs Bolton that they'd scored 2 of their 3 league goals against by targeting our left side and putting balls into the box to finish and sure enough it took them 24 mins to score from targeting our left and putting a ball in for Charles to finish. So one dimensional it's untrue an opposing managers dream to work out.
I do agree. I wouldn’t have sacked him. But I do get the concern that the fans had turned/didn’t like him in the first place so their hand was forced a bit? On that I do think fans chanting Neill Collins your football is ****. When we were 5th in the league is poor. And before someone jumps on this I get that sometimes it was. But we’re supposed to be supporters, right? problem for me seems to be that some supporters are dogmatic in their attitude that we should be above the level we are and therefore even success (and by most metrics that’s what we’ve had in the last two years) at this level isn’t good enough. before someone tells me historically we’re a championship club, I agree. Historically we’ve played a load of teams in the championship who seemed like mainstays but are miles below us now so I don’t buy that logic either.
