Not really. Williamson has worked his way up the English leagues. Collins had no managerial experience over here prior to managing at Oakwell.

My biggest problem with Johnson is he set up not to lose. Playing 4-5-1 in League 1 doesn't work. When we signed Hammill and Scowen got injured it was a massive blessing in disguise because he was forced to play 4-4-2.

 

If by tippy tappy football people mean keeping possession of the ball then I'm all for it. And so was Danny Wilson when we got promoted. If it means playing a slow tempo (ala Collins at times) then I'm against it. Ditto to always insisting on playing out from the back when it's simply not on (ala MK the other night). But if we do have a route out great. Personally -- bearing the scars of watching utter garbage long ball football long ago across English leagues -- that's my default.

 

Tbf they had most of the season looking at relegation so they had plenty of time to decide who they actually wanted and put a deal in place.

Only the top teams can successfully play their way out from the back, and even then they often get it wrong. Sloppy passing, keepers bowling it out straight to the opposition - it’s there every week right up to the highest levels.

So what makes lower league players and coaches persist with this ridiculous tactic? I suppose it’s a fear of seeing the possession stats very low for their team. I hate watching so-called skilful midfielders stopping the flow and playing a two-yard pass BACK to a defender. Take responsibility for goodness sake!!

I blame the 1970s/1980s era Germans. I’m sure they started it and it was extremely tedious to watch. The reason it worked for them though, at international level, was they had players like Beckenbauer who could pick up a ball deep and then carve his way through the opposition to set up a goal, or score himself.

I agree but it's passing behind a player that infuriates me. It drags all the team back. If you're playing keep ball try and pass it in front of on running players. That's why Barnsley and Tottenham have been so tedious this season.
