In the space of two months over the summer he's not going to go from a nearly goal a game striker to a burnt out has been. He's going to be limited in how much time he can spend on the pitch but he's likely going to do someone a good job at our level. It's unlikely to be us though.
Age is important to us because as we lose around 4 million quid a season, we do need resale value for our players. It would be insane to let people like Cole, Kane, Williams and Cadden go for free when we haven't got a pot to piss in. We'd never do that.
Id like him here for a season. Though I'm not sure him & Cosgrove would make a good partnership. I think he'd have been fantastic beside McAtee however!
But it doesn't always need to be about resale value. Some older lads might be the experience to get us out of the league, which will make us more money than resale value.
As mentioned previously, when we played a high press under Val, we asked our strikers to run their blood to water to make it work, they did that, but it meant they were burnt out after an hour. So we need 4 strikers who can do that high press for the combined 90 minutes imo. We were unplayable for a good 70% of that season. That's how we need to play. We don't and won't have the out-and-out quality of some other teams, so we need to work harder than them, press them, never give them a minute. We'll get found out once or twice for sure, but that's our only option for success at this level imo.
I agree it doesn't - and I was one of Norwood's biggest fans last season to be honest. But I can't see the advantage of letting Cole go and replacing him with Rhodes. I think that's the crux of it.
If we had sold those 4 last summer the board would have been hammered they can't win. In hindsight we should have sold them but it is what it is.
I'm starting to agree with you more on here I saw a post other day saying we should have signed lee Gregory at 36... mental.
He hasn't scored since 23rd December. He had a phenomenal first half of the season but hasn't scored since. It's also worth noting that the 15 goals he scored in the first half of the season matched the 15 goals he scored for Wednesday in 4 years. He's been at Huddersfield 3 years and scored 8. He was a fantastic goal scorer in the first half of his career, but it fell off a cliff dramatically. Those 15 goals in 4 months for Blackpool look like an aberration because prior to that he'd scored 32 goals in 7 years. And it returned to the norm in the second half of this season.
We haven't got a choice of keeping Cole though. He's out of contract and no way was he going to sign a new one here. It's his one chance of a biggish payday. I'm sure I'd rather have had Jordan Rhodes here than Cole the second half of the season though.
A fair few of his goals for Blackpool were pens. He’s offered very little for years now. Anyone who’s happy for Cole to leave but wants us to sign Rhodes has completely lost the plot I’m afraid.
I think trying to sign Rhodes is a no brainer. What would you rather have, a punt on a young lower league striker who might get 10 goals and we sell for an undisclosed 10 bob and a blackies egg or a proven goal scorer who will get 20+ goals and get us promoted? We need an experienced spine down the middle of the pitch. Davies, Roberts, Hourihane and Rhodes will help the younger players develop and be worth more in the long run. Definitely have some leadership in those four. Will that happen? not a cat in hells chance, but personally that’s the way forward for me.
Play off Penalty bottling Rhodes? Whose job it is to take penalties? No thanks. I actually got sick of hearing about how poor he was at Wednesday.
He’s a Wednesday fan and was also an Oldham season ticket holder as a young lad when his dad moved back to England.
3 of 15 were penalties. I’d imagine if he’d been fit all season he’d have got 25, although he’s always been streaky. Scores goals in clumps.
