That’s not how football is played anymore. Players aren’t developed to play in that system. Sure it’ll probably work but why not play the systems players have spent their entire lives training for?

By your logic there's no need for a manager because the academy coaches have already determined how the players will play forever

Well no there’s nuance to the specific tactics, but when basically every player coming through at every club has spend their entire lives playing in systems that don’t really work with 442 why would you try and force that?

Worked for Aston villa didn't it? And like I said, Argentina won the world cup playing it.

Maybe it would work, but it seems a silly thing to try to me. Especially with lower league players. Why not play to their strengths?

Either way my problem is with the fact that people treat 4-4-2 as the holy grail and the only formation that works.

I don't think anyone does think it's the only formation that works. I'd say it's quite the opposite actually. People see us playing a formation that clearly isn't working very well and suggest a change to 4-4-2 meanwhile there are others saying that 3-5-2 is the holy grail and the only formation that works so we aren't allowed to change from it.

Argentina played 442, 5 3 2, 4 3 3 during the last world cup. They also had players like Messi, alverez, Martinez, Fernandez etc who can adapt. They also lost to Saudi Arabia in the 1st game playing 442. Playing 4 4 2 exposes you're midfield pair to doing a lot of work, it also leaves gaps between the midfield and the back particularly when playing sides that have a midfield 3/5.

All formations have weaknesses and strengths. What you take from one place you give to another. None are intrinsically better than others.

I think it would be the making of him, more freedom to express himself without the pressure of focal goal scorer.

I know i titled the thread 442 but it was more aimed at what would bring out the best in Jalo.

Fair enough, I think we probably should be looking at switching to a back 4 in any case, 4 2 3 1 with who we have supposedly lined up to coach makes the most sense and Jalo playing on the wing probably would suit him a lot either on the left for crossing or inverted on the right for cutting in and shooting. Connell and (if rumours are to be believed) hourihane as the middle 2 with Phillips as a #10 behind Cosgrove. Recruit a solid starting left winger and left fullback, Marsh would be a good option to bring on as a left winger.

I always say play to yer strengths and thats wer we fell short, players thinking they wer too good or better than they actually wer, yup, you need Team players for a team sport and again we had too many Me, Myself an I players, and i hope the next Manager can bring the Team spirit back to the Club. I'd say play a back 4 then depending on the games and tactics of each game change the formation as required, ther'll be a lot of opinions on this post, I know its whats best for Jalo but i wouldnt pick a team to suit an individual, injury, off day, plans up 5hit creek.

Yet the season before with Williams and Cadden as wing backs, it worked alright. I guess it's not so much the system, as you say, it's the players. I don't necessarily think that you can't expect league 1 players to play in that system, they're facing other league 1 players at the end of the day. It's about getting the right players to play those roles, and ultimately a back 3 who are comfortable with occasionally being left exposed by the wing back.

I thought Argentina played with a front 3 at the world cup? I vaguely recall Messi, Di Maria and Mac Allister in attack for them.
