managers must be able to switch formation and players must be able to play anyway there is no best formation only one that works against the opposition. as for Jalo time on the field will bring out the best of him not ten mins here and there, he has speed and skills although small (as yet he has time to grow) and he needs some strength but reminds me of hamell we do have a great player in Jalo, we have some very good players in the making in our development and u18s sides

I mean I haven't really seen anyone begging for 3-5-2. It's not really about formation it's about the system and the players. Players these days are coached to play out more from the back, press high and lots of changes of position for in possession and out of possession. It's a playstyle that lends itself to a few formations but 4-4-2 with fast wingers and tall strikers as the game was played in decades past isn't one of them. 4-4-2 with a diamond in midfield and narrower wingers does work with it but that's closer to 4-3-3 than 4-4-2 imo.

Bullock started 7 games in 96/97.
Davis and Moses who were part of the back 3, Davis first half of the season Moses second, that we always played in a 3-5-2 started 49 between them. Appleby, the sweeper in that formation, never played as a cantre half due to being about 5 foot 6.

I would like to see us change from the 3-5-2 to be honest, or at least have a plan B when it isn’t working.

We haven’t got the players for a formation/style change but if we could try and implement some attacking wingers into our recruitment I wouldn’t mind trying a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. I think Phillips as a proper 10, behind the striker, would be great.

4231 would be my choice. Especially if it's Stendel. It's what his current side are playing.

4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 with Jalo as a wide front man.

It was more of a 4-3-3 with Di Maria, Alvarez/Martinez and Messi as the front 3 but obviously Messi with a greater license to roam around and kick stones for a bit if he wanted (In the final anyway)

He played a few formations which i think was just to counteract the opposition, he tried 442, 433 and 532 with wing backs.

4-3-3 was the most common formation played but not the only one.

Back to the original point, has anyone ever seen Jalo play on the wing? He hasn't for the first team, and I don't think he does for the youth teams does he?

We always played with wing backs and very rarely in 4-4-2

Not seen him play on the wing but when he has drifted out wide I think he has looked dangerous.

I don't want another season to pass without him being a regular first team starter but I'm concerned he may not be ready to cement his place in a front 2 as a striker that's the reason for the discussion to hopefully give him the platform to shine.

Aye, that was it. I didn't think they'd played 4-4-2 for the majority. As you say, Messi pretty much had a free role, especially as the tournament went on.

No way he's playing in league 1 for the next 2 seasons.

He'd suit the modern 4231 formation at higher levels.. playing as one if the 3 behind the striker with the right to roam and find pockets of space.

It gives a player more passing options and is very versatile.

Where does he play if we play 532 again.

Would we be happy with him being the second striker in a front 2 ?

Depends who the other striker is and whether he can form a partnership with him.

I just don't see him as a central striker, on the right wing he will cause havoc

I haven’t seen that much of him, but can’t say he has given me the impression that he can:
    a) beat a man with the ball at his feet consistently
    b) put in a good cross
    c) defend against the opposition full back

I haven’t seen that much of him, as most on here haven’t, and I don’t want this to be viewed as a criticism of him, but I see him more as a poacher/tricky number 10, Clint Marcelle style.
