The sporting director of Barnsley FC thinks that the clubs defence is really strong. After last season I think that's a pretty worrying opinion of the state of the squad.

What he probably means is that we have strong strength in depth in the CB position, unfortunately it’s quantity over quality and unless we can find someone daft enough to buy any of them we won’t be spending any more money in that position so fingers crossed Clarke is a miracle worker.

Christ talk about glass half full.
The article does say when fit the defence is strong, but it also says he said we need left back and keeper. It also says we will have bigger budget than last summer (including investment) and they are only looking at players who will improve the first team.

Lots of positives in that article but let’s focus on the one potential negative.

Given some of the defensive performances last season especially towards the end of the season which in all probability cost us promotion it's a pretty big negative. It's no good having a bigger budget if all that happens is the club does is piss it up against the wall on more of the same the quality of signing this summer needs to be much higher than those made last summer in all positions by especially in defence.

Not disputing that, just the fact you chose to highlight the only negative, even though he did say we needed a left back and keeper (which last time I checked is part of the defence) and also said would only sign to improve the first team which does sort of suggest it’s not gonna be more of the same.

Very optimistic about next season. It's obvious the powers that be are looking up rather than down.

Also wondering if he means 4 permanents? Potentially more loans on top of that

In the chron it says. Anyone who performed well on loan last season, they are exploring that avenue. But basically the ball is in their court. As to what options they have. Notably mentioning Robert's who they think enjoyed his time here. Working on it.

    Imo
I would assume that means Robert's and Grant.
The others either not good enough. Out of our reach. Or available for loan again. Eg MaCatee

Roberts started season well was poor at the end, McAtee take him or leave him not as good as folk make out and Grant is in same bracket as McCarthoss leave well alone.

    Out of our current squad?
Connell, MDG, Pines, Earl Cosgrove a few young ens by sounds, Shepherd & Lopata looked okay at times rest I’m not bothered if I never saw em in a Reds shirt again. I am ecstatic at the 5 that were released though

Those 4 contract rebels cost us promotion and a decent bloke his job.

I actually think the majority of the defenders we had at our disposal this/last season will be good defenders. They just aren't yet.

And that's the problem which we've had for at least a decade. It isn't new to our current owners, Patrick was just as guilty of it.
