Good question. I was wondering if anyone on here would be able to answer that. Would seem like quite unnecessary expenditure on red paint in post-war South Yorkshire!
I remember seeing that on the telly and thinking how entertaining it must have been when it rained. Ditto The Shay.
Guess there's a possibility that 'CO-OP PAINTS' was never on the roof ?? - the 'enhancers' overdoing the 'enhancing!'
Sometimes there was more watching the game on the Co-op pitch than what was happening on the Oakwell pitch.
Those were the days of what my Dad and his mates called the "faithful five thousand". And a lot of times we didn't get that! I certainly remember there being plenty of room on the kop.
The spion kop was part muck heap at least until the early 80s remember standing on it watching a youth cup match against Everton I think. Concrete at the front muck heap at the back.
Worked on ponty end when it was redeveloped most of the terrace was made up of slag and broken bottles from nearby pits and glassworks
I can remember a set of away fans behind the kop on the Co op ground throwing bricks over the wall...not realising the Barnsley fans were stood on a mountain of ammunition
Mainly cinders rather than slag. At the Ponte end you used to get black-breet just walking up the bank to the terrace when it was dry.
