It's been mentioned before on here, could see Russell making a good no nonsense CB, not sure about his ability to play put from the back that would worry me, but definitely got the physical build
He's far too slow getting back when caught out when in the middle, I dread to think what he'd be like as a centre half. He's quite good on the ball, if anywhere, I'd probably plonk him attacking midfielder with 0 defensive responsibility!
Great post mate. Reads the game excellently and is a great footballer. It's so underrated being able to do the basics as well as having talent. In the past we've worshipped some players with no talent just because they could run. Why can't you run, tackle and pass in a straight line?
Russell is a strange one. Reads a game better than anyone else in the squad for me. Very rarely wastes a ball. aware of players around him with his 1 touch football at times. But it appears just strolls around without a care in the world. A clone of him and Kane (who couldn't pass watter) would have made a very good player.
"No Nonsense" was the key take out, of you needed some physicality to defend set pieces in the last 10 mins of a game just holding shape I'm sure with the right coaching he'd could do a job
I reckon this will be Russell's season coming up. Twenty three years old, gathering experience all the time. A little more guidance from a midfield stacked coaching staff and he'll be unstoppable. Hopefully.
So underrated. Russell on his day is top at this level. His Oxford away performance was second to none. The issue is his fitness and he’s very inconsistent. He’s an asset and will be a fantastic partner for Hourihane in rotating for those long Saturday - Tuesday - Saturday seasons.
I'm not so sure hes underrated mate. Most I think accept he has bags of ability. But Just doesn't appear to put the effort in. I was at Oxford and agree on his performance. But he needs to show that more consistently as you say. My fear given the reports that came out of Huddersfield at the time. (If true that is) He needs to concentrate on his game and not a bad influence around the place. As I say. Not sure if fact. But udders were happy to offload him.
He's definitely got ability!, it's his application at times that gets called into question...........sithi.
A poor man’s McPhail is what I’d call him. But he’s still young and can develop further. Add in a run of games and a sprinkle of confidence, and I think you’ll see him grow as a player.
Russell is the sort of player who will look very classy when we’re on top in games and controlling the tempo of the game. Flip side of the coin when we’re under pressure against decent sides he’s the weak link and contributes to us loosing our shape. Some players are just lazy and it can’t be coached out of them it’ll be interesting to see if we can improve this side of his game. Ability on the ball is not the issue with Russell.
I am really hopeful he can kick on. As he is a confidence player who I am hoping can prove himself as he has not won many over. I think he his a very good player ,with Houriane beside him he could be stand out ,now Kane isn't around.
Russell needs to be playing alot more regularly, Connells place isn't guaranteed either and shouldn't be, he still hasn't got back to the form pre injury
