"Hansen's most memorable moment on the Premier League highlights programme came in 1995 when he famously responded to a Manchester United defeat at Aston Villa by insisting: "You can't win anything with kids." "That team - which included Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and David Beckham - won the FA Cup and Premier League Double that season." Jeez.
Fair comment as that by far is his most memorable moment from the PL highlights show MOTD. It's not like they are saying it's the most memorable moment of his whole career.
It probably is but is it really the right time to be highlighting an error of professional judgement?
I remember him being one of the most talented centre halves I've seen play. And a cracking pundit. Come on Alan, pull through.
I think in context (just after describing him as "one of the most insightful and influential pundits in the country") it's fine. I'm sure he's had the odd chuckle over it - doubt they'd have included it if he hadn't.
Watching MoD back in the day. my overriding memory is... I'd love to have a pint with Alan Hansen.... Can't pay a higher compliment. Came across as a really nice bloke.
A great player and my favourite ever pundit. Also, an ex team mate of his highness at Thistle. Hoping he makes a full recovery.
It brings back better memories of Motd, when he and Trevor Brooking, and even Jimmy Hill were regulars. And Des Lynam was the host. I also thought Hansen gave as good as he got with Skinner & Baddiel, on Fantasy footy.
Absolute top notch footballing centre back. Always comes across as a top bloke too. All the best to him.
Remember when Baddiel and Skinner talked about someone rounding a player and he said he'd get the quote in on the next edition of MOTD and he did!
You had to know how to handle Frank & David, and Alan Hansen was cool and calm lol, just like he was as a player.
Classiest defender I've ever seen play live. Even though the list would include Winstanley, Howard, McCarthy, Evans, Futcher, De Zeeuw, Mawson.
Crikey, let’s hope he pulls through but why not wait to start this sort of thread after the event. Not sure it’s needed yet, we all know what’s happening if we have read the news.......always thought you paid your respects after not before.
Steve Bruce, Brian McClair, Paul Parker, Schmeichel, Mark Hughes, Gary Pallister, Paul Ince, Kanchelskis, Dublin, May, Sharpe amongst others, I think it's pretty fair to say he got it spot on about not winning anything with just kids!
Because his illness has been reported, and most on here - being passionate football fans - feel a need to respond in a sympathetic, respectful and appreciative way. That's not to say your own comment isn't respectful - it is. But I can see why BBS'ers see a reason to respond in appreciation of a great player.
Mate of mine played golf with him a few weeks ago. It must have been a quick decline, whatever it is. Top player and pundit. Hope he pulls through.
