I'm going to take a wild guess. It's a conservative area isn't it

As corrupt as this obviously is... I want to just add a side note from personal experience. Just over a year ago we started to consider if we should move out of London and to an area that has less population density but still have some access to my other halfs parents and to London for existing healthcare needs.

We looked at quite a few places (many of which I mean driving to and or through) and though Cranleigh wasn't one of them, similar types of villages. what struck me was that despite being thought of as affluent towns and villages, there were clearly signs of decline and decay.

I think Godalming was one which is in Hunts constituency and I was shocked at how many shops were empty and shuttered. Similar in places like Canterbury and Tonbridge.

Thats at least 18 months ago and given the inlaws circumstances its no longer as relevant. But it does show how traditional tory heartlands have endured decline and are likely to punish the tories at the ballot box.

The levelling up funding scheme is criminal in the way they've tried to hive off money to their mates constituencies purely for political gain.

These private school fees don't pay for themselves. Hunt has an election to win.

£300k in Cranleigh would barely get two walls plastered and finished. Not sure what levelling up is going to do for them.

This is the one thing that strikes me about this current government. By and large they are incompetent and shameless in equal measure. I suspect there is a good argument for some kind of grant for this village hall. People in this kind of area pay the most into the pot and arguably should be able to get something in return. BUT and its a huge BUT, how does this look?? It's simply not a good optic. I agree it's Hunt trying to save his own skin or at least looks enough like it. He always strikes me as being some half wit who has a look like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Moreover, Rishi who keeps him in post must go down as being staggering incompetent, this being one example of that.

It seems they no longer care how it looks. They lie, get caught and repeat it. They commit frauds and crimes and cover up for each other while pointing out someone else may have committed a petty crime... Which never pan out after scrutiny. They continue to cream off the public purse, while cutting critical services for those who need them. And continue to divide and play groups against each other for no other gain than their own.

Hunt has put £100k of his personal money to fund his local campaign. That should highlight how knackered tory coffers are, and how desperately he wants to cling on to a seat despite knowing his party is going to get trounced.

It's an odd part of the world. I have friends in Tonbridge and visit often. A lot of Tonbridge's population are decendents of council tenants originally from London who were re-housed during the war. On the flip side you have loads of money coming in from families moving out of London and looking for more space over the past few decades.

The highstreet boasts numerous pound shops, next to trendy cafes and high-end lifestyle boutiques. There are two parallel worlds in the town which rarely meet each other.

You're absolutely right. It was one of the places that worked best in terms of location and we researched it and were quite hopeful in advance.

If i remember right, we drove around a lot of the streets (which were insanely narrow) and we were a bit disappointed at the general area where more of the traditional housing stock was. We parked at the castle and decided to walk around the river and again, we were pretty disappointed so ended up coming away very swiftly.

As morbid as it sounds, I suspect we'll be in London until something happens to my wifes parents and then we'll be able to move anywhere we want to... though at that point, I'm not sure how we decide where to go given we can choose literally anywhere.

When the Royals say they are going to attend a Street Party with the paupers, for a coronation or such like, Cranleigh is one of the places they go to.
Think that is where Eric Clapton lives or lived if I am not mistaken.
