As aforementioned, Southgate has done brilliantly to make the national side a collective team. He’s made the public want to watch England again, and not feel like a chore having to watch them. However, I feel he has gone as far as he can. I don’t think he will win us the tournament (I so very wish to be wrong). He made the same mistake against Italy in the EF that he did against Croatia in the WCSF. Fingers crossed because we have a great team with a great attitude, but tactically I think we’re worse off than 4 or 5 different nations who are capable of winning.
Interesting. Doesn’t seem to be a great deal of consensus, possibly that 2002/04 had better players but 2022/24 is a better team. I thought it might cause a bit of debate.
I followed England home and away during the "Golden Generation", what a waste of money. This generation have got a Euro Final and WC semi under their belt and barely much is said about it. They've already eclipsed them with more to come, hopefully.
Had to jump on this 1 to 11 the so called golden generation is better the current crop has a better squad that’s it Pickford Neville Terry Ferdinand Cole Scholes Gerrard lampard Foden Rooney Kane Walker is a bang average footballer with incredible pace that’s it
Much better now across the squad. Pickford Walker stones Ferdinand Cole Scholes Bellingham rice Foden kane Saka
"Golden Generation". Germany, Italy, Spain and France and even Portugal had so-called golden generations. They were labelled thus after they won something or after winning multiple tournaments. We called our crop this when they had nothing but promise in the bag. The most arrogant English footballing thing I can recall in my lifetime. Hadn't earned the right to be called anything. Quite pathetic.
Starting 11 maybe not. But the squad as a whole, yeah. We have way more depth now. Just don't have the elite CBs we had then
That’s a bold statement. He’s been a mainstay at city in years, and captains them. If you said this point when he was at Tottenham then I’d agree. Although, saying it now I believe you’re wrong. Opinions, eh?
He's absolutely fantastic but not on the level of Terry and Rio were when we had them imo. The rest we have to partner him too are way off that elite level too
Sven probably felt obliged to play all the golden generation despite them not getting on and also playing out of position - like Scholes on the left hand side of a middle 4. That always messed up the team, then they were up against since unreal teams. Other international teams seem to be able to go with the right order - tactics - formation - pick the team to fit it. We always seem to go with players that have to play - a formation - tactics. It’s all @arse about t1t
Terry was a long way off elite. Very passionate and determined that helped gloss over the defencies bit imagine him to do what Stones does for City. Sol Campbell was a better player than Terry.
