In todays terms, what do you consider to be an average earner and a high earner when it comes to annual wages in the UK?

Just looking, the Green party are advocating hiking national insurance payments on anyone earning over 50k per year.

I'd say that is a little too low now, maybe more appropriate to aim at 70k plus.

I would have thought even the average uk wage now would be in excess of 35k.

50k is not much in London, but a good wage in Barnsley

I agree it's a decent wage, but probably below the level that should be targeted to start hiking up taxes.

£50k isn't great in Manchester, the South East, Chester, Bristol and even Leeds and several other parts of the country now depending on your age and dependents.

50 grand is a massive wage. If it isn't then let's pay care workers, retail staff, delivery drivers and admin 50 grand.

For some context here minimum wage at 40 hours a week is just below £24k a year.

And the size of your mortgage. If you've paid it off or you're close to having done so £50k should be fine for most people, whereas if you've bought recently anywhere but the cheapest parts of the UK then it's probably not going to cover much more than your bare essentials.

293 jobs in Barnsley here, see how many get 50 grand.

    https://findajob.dwp.gov.uk/search?loc=80692&p=1

I am absolutely astonished that people feel 50 grand isn't an enormous wage.

What do you think most of us get?

It's basically this, people tend to live to their means so anyone earning £50k will have outgoings which makes it feel like they don't "earn" much.

To be clear I'm not saying it isn't a good wage, but many earning that amount will feel like it isn't - especially if they don't have the perspective of ever having lived on much less.

2 billion. That's why the average wage is so high yet 99% of advertised jobs fall below it.

I’d say well over half of delivery drivers, certainly in the parcel game are on 50k plus a year.

They’ll no doubt be putting the hours in though.
