Can someone please explain what the penalty was all about? Imho not a pen in first place (guy trips over his own feet). Then pen itself ...I thought keeper moving or encroachment was a re take. Thirdly why did VAR not pick any of the above. Oh and whats the ruling on why Rodri was only booked? Help...I'm losing it and with offside too. I'm losing it with VAR which was really good and quick in the previous games.
I thought Rodri pulled out of the tackle and a blatant dive. Gob smacked they didn't take more than10 seconds mulling it over. On encroachment, I may be wrong but his own team encroached. If he'd scored it would have been a retake.
Blatant dive, one of those where the studio says.... "he felt the contact so is entitled to go down". Dunno how VAR managed to agree with the initial decision. Crappest decision of the tournament so far, English ref Michael Oliver.
Shambles all round wasn't it. The rule on the red card is if it's a genuine attempt to play the ball then it's only a yellow if the pen is given. It was the "double jeopardy" thing, however it wasn't a attempt.to do anything really as he just brushed by him running then he tripped himself up. It's this kind of thing that's hard to take with VAR as it's still incompetent referees watching replays. No penalty, booking for the dive. Move on. Players continue to cheat and con but I hoped VAR would help stop it, sadly it's so ingrained we have the nonsense of "every right to go down" It's pathetic.
For me, this is why VAR doesn't work. It's being used to make subjective decisions, and the ruling is, VAR can only intervene if they think there's a clear and obvious error. The ref in real time has thought there's sufficient to award a penalty, and the VAR has concluded that, upon review, the referee wouldn't change his mind if given another chance to look at it. It's incidents in the game like that where referee's SHOULD be required to have another look. I'd scrap this idea of 'clear and obvious error', if the VAR looks at it and thinks, you might want to look at that again, then the ref should. It'll do nothing for the length of games, but it stops incorrect decisions being made. So based on the current ruling, the decision not to overturn the penalty was correct in my opinion, as there's contact, so not a clear and obvious error. It's wrong like, but that's what it is.
Thank you...all round. I called my dad at half time so didn't hear if there was a debate on it. Imho no pen...rest is nonsense but not sure what VAR is doing if they can't help the ref see the error, with no contact.
I think it is and players who didn't quite make it but would like to stay in the game, far better than lower management types in my day.
For me the big issue in Football (and this is worldwide) is the acceptance of cheating. I don't see how we break easily. I have said many times, Football has become a game where 22 players try to con the ref then we blame the ref. With have ex players condoning cheating week in and week out on TV and radio. "He's every right to go down" "Given the referee a decision to make" "Used his experience" "Dark arts of the game" "Game management" While very we accept cheating little will Improve
Said it before d ill say it again. Should be a part of the contract between football authorities and the broadcasters that the use of certain phrases on air will result in a large fine to the broadcaste
I don't understand the VAR interventions. They by routine check on incidents after the fact and get the ref to stop play. Sometimes they're absolutely marginal things. I watched Italy v Albania last night and with about 10 minutes left at 2-1 an Albanian striker ran into the box with an Italian defender challenging him for the ball. The immediate TV replay showed the defender absolutely ragging the shirt off the back of the striker. No other players around. Blatant. Var....not a peep.
Retrospective bans for diving and cheating. Referees to start and enforce all the laws of the game correctly. Pull a shirt? Foul/penalty. Swear at the Ref? Red card.
