Whatever happened to 4-4-2 full backs and wingers?

Maybe not but I really think it’s madness to not have two fit left backs in a 26 man squad

I can’t say I’ve noticed that. As I’ve said many times on here - if players aren’t confident crossing with either foot at this level, they shouldn’t be playing at this level.

I don't disagree with you on that, Fired. You'd think being able to pass & cross with your weaker foot to a decent standard would be a minimum to get in at this level of football!

Following Southgate's last press conference I am losing any confidence I had left in him.

Saying that Kalvin Phillips has never been replaced yet takes Mainoo and Wharton who plays that position then starts a right back there.

Takes an unfit left back despite having a fit left back who Southgate has capped back home.

Does not know how to put the correct player into the correct position. Foden is not a left winger he is a number 10 but that's Bellingham's spot. Trying to shoehorn a player in to put a square peg in a round hole isn't working.

Barnsley haven't got a left back either, national shortage, I hear there is some good ones abroad.

Nobody grows up saying I want to be a left back.

We need to make being a left back sexy again like John Beresford did according to my wife. Bring back short shorts.

Does anyone grow up saying they want to be a right back?

As Gary Neville said.....you always start off as a winger, then right midfield, then they tell you you're not good enough and you end up a right back.

I used to play left back, right footed, a la Denis Irwin. Took all the free kicks and set pieces too.

That’s not fair. I started a central midfielder but didn’t go through puberty properly until 15, and was a foot shorter than everyone I was playing against - as such they gave me the smaller wingers to kick.

I think it's the left back in the changing room gag that puts people off. There is an abundance of right backs around so no that position must be popular

There's also the fact that there's far, far more right footed people than left. About 85-90% are right sided I read recently.

Livramento is naturally right footed too though mate. Does play left back though especially when Burn is out
