End of June....still no signings...

I might be wrong but most, if not all, were in the unattached pool waiting to be picked up by somebody. Evans has chucked a few rescue rings into the water, see what comes up.

 

Of course the club must ensure that the right players are brought in and not just add more numbers for the sake of it. That being said, are the club setting themselves up for more excuses if players don't arrive until late in the transfer window. Last summer was an absolute ahot show and the club left Collins with a massive problem to solve defensively. I hope they do better for Calrke to give him a fighting chance.

I said this in January but it's even more applicable now. If you were a player why would you sign with a team before now, unless that team is paying ridiculously over market value or it's as a level far higher than you expected to be playing?

If it was me I'd do one of the following, depending on my circumstances/priorities.

Wait until right before pre-season started
Sign the best place I can in the time before the season starts leaving enough time to get up to speed before the season (probably realistically a couple of weeks)
Wait until deadline day

 

Plenty of reasons to criticise the way we are run. Not signing players in June isn’t one of them.

 

I mentioned on here the other day, Rotherham released loads of players, they simply had to sign loads more.

Charlton did the same last season, and were bang average. I’d sooner we didn’t go down the route of quantity over quality.

 

Oh I agree. I was simply replying to the notion that we can't make any because they are under contract etc.

 

Nah most were still under contract (contracts end 30th June) many had been told they were going such as Raggett but still under contract until end of June.

Some like Dawson were offered deals at their previous clubs too.

 

Not sure what the point is here? They are still technically under contract with us until end of June but could be announced elsewhere now if they found another club. Just as with Williams who was in the exact same position as both you mentioned

 

The point I'm making is. Until players are officially out of contract. They can talk to clubs but not have to commit until then.

Portsmouth have just boosted their income more than double I'd have guessed, so wanted to get it over ther line b4 others step in. Williams may have picked up double his wages at Barnsley over the last month.

I'm not sure but could imagine they will have have to pay up the remainder of his contract with us. 4 weeks @ a minimum £4/5k pw. Is a substantial sum. Back in our coffers.

Kane apparantly reported going to Derby but not yet signed on the dotted line. May have signed a pre contract if the case.
Cole several clubs interested apparantly so I imagine will go where the biggest offer is.

A contract between a player and a club may therefore only be terminated on expiry of the contract or by mutual agreement.

Which I'm guessing happened in Williams case.

The transfer market imo will be kicking on from now. Those who ponder too long could end up without a club.

Kane hasn't been announced at Derby cos he's not signed there. Not because of his contract. They are in same boat as Pompey having gone up so if he'd have agreed to go there it'd have been announced. Him and Cole won't have been announced elsewhere as they will still be weighing up options etc.

Same reason why we have only announced one. Cos we've only signed one.

 

Just giving a scenario as to what can happen. Re Kane I only wrote that in speculation. A player can talk to any club 6 months prior to the end of a contract. And indicate their intentions with a pre contract. That's what may have happened with lopata in our case. Again just surmiseing. As he wasn't old enough but what with his case with southend over contract liabilities . taking up his right to leave.

With six months or less remaining on an existing contract for players aged 23 or older, they are free to negotiate with other clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement, indicating their ability to move to their intended club on a Bosman transfer when the next transfer window opens.

There's no real need to get half a dozen players in as soon as the season has ended, it's not good business. Paying say, 6 players an average of 5k a week for 10 weeks of doing very little doesn't make a deal of sense.
It's £300k we aint got.
