Why do some players just not like being at Barnsley?

Aren't fans of all clubs the same though?

Barnsley are and always have been a stepping stone for some players.
Maybe ones who think they're rather better than they actually are are a bit miffed they have to stay here longer than they anticipated.

 

Could be ambition , we went from losing to Wednesday, to selling our 2 centre halves and replacing with one from Woking and one from Ponte pit, add into that Neil Collins and the hoof ball we played, He could have looked at the current transfer movement and potential loss of more of our better players and thought I'm off, OR he could have been offered 2/3 k a week more, who knows, all assumptions COYR

 

I used to think it was because, under the current regime, the Club is being sold as a stepping stone but I've started weighing through Grenville Firth and David Wood's "The Who's Who of Barnsley FC" and it's been happening since the year dot. A few players came, moved on and stayed in the area after their playing careers took them elsewhere (Jimmy Baxter being a prime example) but for most they just passed through Barnsley FC.

 

It's really unpopular but it is the toxic atmosphere at Oakwell. Very quiet, constant moaning, abusive comments.
It's not the same everywhere else.

I wouldn't advise anyone to join.

To berate the coach and team when in the playoff places is unforgivable.

This is a library.

We don't even sing when we are winning.

Collins had no testicles. He could have bartered with the board when he was appointed but chose to tow the line. No coincidence it was his first job in England. Felt he'd been given a gift and the board loved it. Total patsy. Brought in Pines to save face but unfortunately I'm fitter. Gamble over.

 

According to Gauthier Ganaye, we offered Hourihane £14k per week to sign a new contract and stay with us. Patrick Cryne was a massive admirer of his and really wanted him to stay. The problem was that Villa, who were below us in the table at the time, offered Conor probably twice that and also a better long-term prospect of Premier League football. We also reportedly offered Mowatt more than we had ever offered anyone before, but, as with Hourihane, he decided to go to a bigger club which was offering him considerably more than what, for us, was our huge wages offer. I am sure that both Hourihane and Mowatt were very happy at Oakwell, but the extra money and long-term career prospects persuaded them both to leave.

 

Great post. Agree with every word. I'd love to see Mowatt come back alongside Hourihane. Mowatt was a legend too in my opinion .I'll stop dreaming now

 

Whether we are a so called stepping stone for players and managers/coaches, and a so called selling club as well, etc.
It was never ever as bad as what it's been, for so many years now. The self sustainable (Moneyball) idea is great, and I wish it would work.
But for me, it ruins our hopes of getting back into the Championship one day, AND trying to be a bit more competitive.
If we'd beat the Fowls at Wembley like we should have done, I think we'd have been in the bottom three all season, with them and Rotherham and Hudds.
Then it brings about questions like what was the point in coming up in the first place etc ?.

 

They'll go wherever the most money is (obviously with few exceptions). But if I were a footballer, had no affinity to barnsley, before joining id speak to current Barnsley players and have a read online. Then without question id stay far, far away from our club. Fanbase is a disgrace at times.

That's all about opinion again isn't it kid, and most of us aren't going to agree with this subject either way, are we!.

 

I do feel like that, mate. Once a player is scapegoated the abuse is beyond a joke. Even the personal abuse towards JAQ. Criticism is fine, but the amount of abuse surrounding our fan base stunned me last season bud

 

Because context.

Same as why some people love working at a certain place & others hate it. It's a huge combination of factors & ultimately boils down to luck a lot of the time.

 

I think the policy backfires.
Ever since we bought into the get young uns in policy.
Players sign, thinking "I can develop my career quicker than sat in the reserves" so to speak. Then get face on when bigger clubs come in enquiring or listen to lots of Journo garbage. And if we think their value is more than on offer. Hang on to em.

 

Herbie has had the face on since he was loaned out to Oxford. There are lots of players who remember their time at Barnsley with fondness, look at the videos the club made of former players wishing us well before the playoffs.

 

I don’t think many players have much of an affinity in general to any club to be honest.

Their primary driver is money, material possessions, their own career and themselves. They’re very young lads in unique positions and it’s no real surprise. They’re also pushed to move by their agents.

I doubt we pay much compared to the market and our own business model is to give players game time then sell them on, so it’s no real surprise players are ambivalent towards the badge, at best. On top of this we aren’t exactly a glamour club, the likes of Huddersfield, Bolton etc etc are much more attractive to align themselves with (stadiums / facilities etc) than Barnsley Fc.

It’s a short career and there’s a big difference between earning £3k a week and £7k a week.

with Kane I also sensed he rates himself a bit better than his talent could justify.

 

There is no doubt in my mind that agents have played a very big part in fuelling greed. Their own, often huge, earnings, are dependent on creating a climate whereby players are made aware of how much other clubs are paying and encouraging the players whom they represent to become dissatisfied with their current high wages and seek even higher wages, which will, of course, put even more funds into the pockets of the agents.
