Can't argue with that! However, it can't be just down to luck that Southgate has taken England to two Euros finals and a World Cup semi final. There are some great players in the England team which helps of course, but the other "big" countries all have their superstars as well. I don't think that Southgate is perfect (of course not), but he must be doing something right. I feel that while Southgate may not be the best tactician, he has turned England into a team instead of a bunch of stars.
Once again we play negative, bland, handbrake on football. Once again, this only changes when we go one down. Getting Watkins on, palmer too, good moves. Get a good goal, back in the game, and have the momentum. Had Spain on the back foot. Immediately drop back, put the handbrake straight back on and allow the momentum to switch back - without Spain having to do anything. Spain were better on the night and have been the best team in the tournament. But they aren’t exactly an all time great international side. They’ve lit up the tournament by being unshackled, allowing their insanely talented young attacking players to play at will. But they were very attackable. They allowed a lot of space in behind. England’s manager picked his attacking players - and constantly tied their legs together. Another what might have been. History will be kind to Southgate and show how many tournaments he got close in. That’s fine. Give him a ceremonial job at the fa for life. MD of St George’s park or something, oversee things, mentor young coaches etc. But it’s time to go. It was a while ago, but it definitely is now. People have mentioned Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Jurgen Klopp. I’d take any of them over Gareth; if we could get Klopp, I think he’d be a perfect fit for the squad of players we have.
Blimey. Seeing as Kane, Foden, Rice, Walker and Bellingham are all rubbish, Southgate has done a brilliant job to get this ragtag bunch to another international final.
Lost to the best side in the tournament, in the final. I can see this Spain side being the one to beat for a fair few years, given the youth they have. England also should be able to carry on getting to the latter stages of competitions. Southgate? Who knows what he'll decide to do, I've read that the FA have offered him another 2 years. I'd have no complaints if he stayed on until next WC. If we are to stick with English managers then there's not a great amount to choose from right now. I don't think Howe would leave Newcastle right now, Potter doesn't excite me, the list of potentials is short. Klopp would be the perfect fit, but would it interest him?
It is all luck, look at our opponents compared to those we've met in finals & semis On a serious note, he'd be perfect as an assistant manager. He's been a brilliant man manager, the togetherness in the squad has never been higher, he's got them working for each other and they seem to genuinely care for one another. The idea to walk beside a penalty taker halfway when we're in a shootout, was a excellent idea. Little stuff like that have a huge impact imo. But tactically, he's just nowhere near it mate imo.
A nice man, certainly not phenomenal, he is a football lucky lucky man, 6 million+ a year for achieving absolutely nothing and probably a knighthood, there is a lot being said about his man management and to a degree that's a fair point, but, try and take tonight's disappointing result out of the equation and you're left with a tournament where England have been terrible on a regular basis. It was evident early on that Spain played a brand of football geared to win a tournament, England relied on the luck of the draw, not once throughout the tournament did anyone ( truth be told) have genuine faith in Southgate's ability to win the thing.
Pickford our man of the match for me , kept score down in that second half .Spain were worthy winners , Southgate has gone as far as he can go , time for a change
Apart from Ramsey, arguably our most successful manager, whether you like his brand of football or not. Has to get huge respect for that. But often a change is as good as a rest, and I personally think it’s probably time for a change now.
They'll probably coc.k things up by picking someone who is media savvy rather than someone who is genuinely a good coach.Theyll go for someone 'safe' I would think
Here is a list of England Managers Southgate has surpassed. Walter Winterbottom Don Revie Ron Greenwood Bobby Robson Graham Taylor Terry Venables Glenn Hoddle Kevin Keegan Sven Goran Erikson Steve McClaren Fabio Capello Roy Hodgson Sam Allardyce
Declan rice 100 million. One of the mpst overated footballers ive ever seen. Bloody shocking. Tactics were *****. Its a final ffs. 2 finals on the spin and we play the same old *****
I think Gareth was the safe option, 8 years back.? I really can’t think of anyone else. The foreign option never worked.. ? He’ll probably walk now.? But I seriously can’t think of anyone else..?
At least I don't have to listen to all this "it's coming home" ******** - not for a couple of years anyway
We keep hearing this most successful manager since Ramsey line, Marc. Put it into context though. 1990 semi final lost to a seriously good German team. Was it in Japan, lost a quarter final to Brazil, 86 lost a quarter final to Argentina with Maradona in his prime. Southgate had a very friendly route in 2018 then lost to a quality team. Again in this tournament (decent performance against Holland apart). He's done no better than previous managers in terms of winning big games against quality teams. The difference being that under Southgate against quality teams we've been chronically conservative, lacked the belief to take them on despite showing in each game we had the abilty to do so at certain points and our negativity has cost us serious chances to win. After finally causing Spain problems last night, wresting the impetus from them and equalising we immediately handed it back to them. You cannot give quality international sides 70% of the possession and territory and expect them not to score. Time and time again Southgate has relied on exactly that and failed. He was a "safe" appointment. Did a safe job and has left us wondering what might have been. Croatia, Italy, Spain. With a little self belief we could have won one of those.
