Looks to me like we are towing to get the players in we are after cos we won't pay the wages. With the league looking stronger this year I sadly see us only mid table. They should have invested a little more over the last two seasons to get us were we need to be.Alas I think that ship has now sailed and I'm afraid we are going to be in this league for quite a few years ! .
There’s an awful lot of assumed knowledge in this post. You don’t know who we’re after. If they want to sign. How much they want. How much we’re paying. How much our competitors are paying. Everyone said we would be midtable the summer of 2022 and we made the playoffs. Everyone said we would be midtable summer of 2023 and we made playoffs. I think we already have a squad capable of another top six finish with additions still to come. The teams at the top are very strong this year but people forget there’s comfortably 15 teams (on paper) worse than us in this league we should be taking points from.
I'm going to go with the evidence that we havent signed a single player other than out of contract individuals without a club despite Clarke publically saying weeks ago he wanted it done and dusted by now. And it on the face of it, it seems pretty compelling evidence to me. Hopefully that changes today but it would be grossly negligent to try and start a season with rhe attacking options we currently have.
Yes your right ED1, I don't know who we're after, they don't want to sign and they want more than we're willing to pay. All of our main competitors in the top 8 teams or so have already strengthened.
You say this as if it’s a criticism - if they won’t sign for what we can offer I don’t want us to sign them.
I remember his performance in one of the televised games last season (West Brom????). I cannot recall if he came on as a sub, or if he was subbed, but he didn't play the full ninety, that's for sure. I thought that he looked a threat, but more like a winger than anything else, but he did get to the by-line and put crosses in. I don't think that he created a goal from those crosses. If we want a quick wing-back who is more like a winger, he will do very nicely. Good age. Good pedigree and plenty of potential for further development. I would say this is good business, especially as left wing-backs are at a premium.
I still don't think that confirms that we 'won't pay the wages'. There's a huge difference between having a bid accepted for a player, and them subsequently signing for us. It's been made clear that Longelo is leaving Birmingham, who's to say that he isn't waiting for a better deal. There's a hundred and one reasons why we've not got all of our business done. Some of it will be wage related, no doubt. But there's absolutely no evidence of that.
