Group of South Wales lads that support Spurs. So many people think it’s ok not to follow your local team. I’m surprised at some of the replies.
Aww what a shame that it's gone lol. But hey, it's a weird thing isn't it, where most fans in sport think everybody should support their own 'local' club, or Intl team.
The one thing I find really strange is when you’ll get someone from Barnsley who decides to support a Man Utd or Liverpool & then starts ranting about Scousers or Mancs like he’s in daily contact with them. It just seems weird to me. If I lived all my life in Lancashire & randomly chose to be a Barnsley fan I can’t imagine I’d dislike Sheffield Wednesday as much as I do as I wouldn’t come into contact with their fans. All seems a bit forced to me.
Yep. I've got a mate who supports Barnsley, Villa and Liverpool. Born in Brum, but moved to Barnsley after a few month. He calls Birmingham, Man Utd and Everton scum... like why lol
I just don't grasp their reasons for not supporting local, other than obviously their family. But the amount of people (especially abroad) who pick teams seemingly at random (mostly very good clubs obviously...) and the ones who 'support' 2 clubs are even more baffling to me. I know they're not hurting owt but I just find it so mental. If Barnsley went bust I could never support another, id just be more of a part time fan of Scarborough or an amateur side
I support (for my sins) Barnsley and Scunthorpe. I was born in Scunthorpe and my first games were friendlies at the Old Show Ground against Liverpool and Spurs (not been since). I moved to Barnsley in 1980 and started going to the odd game with my dad as a kid and progressed from there. One of my schoolmates was a massive Liverpool fan... until WImbledon beat them in the FA Cup final and he suddenly switched to Sheff Utd. He then tried to retcon that he'd always supported the Blades...
See, yours is at least understandable if you catch my drift bud. I just don't understand how people do it, for instance like your mate did!
That’s me an’all. It’s a love affair. After 65 years of faithful devotion if we went bust I’d never support another professional club. I like football but others just don’t interest me. I’d sooner watch t’Brig.
I find that calling supporters of any other football team as scum is weird. They are just humans supporting a football team, they are pretty much like you and me on the whole.
I've supported Barnsley all my life. Was born in Kings Lynn. Family were from Barnsley originally and never looked back since.
I sometimes go and watch Didcot Town as they are within walking distance but I was born & bred in Wombwell so the Reds were my obvious choice. although Burrows used to run a coach to Hillsborough every Wednesday home game. There were more Blades, Owls and Leeds supporters in Wombwell during the 1960s.
If BFC disappeared there's no way I could switch to another team. I'm a sort of Newcastle fan as the wife is a Geordie, but my heart just isn't in it properly like with BFC.
Yeah, shame it’s gone. Maybe the Facebook group took it down? I think it’s normal for young kids to support whoever is winning the league at the time, it was always the way when I was at school, at least it gets them interested in the game at an early age. It’s when they carry that on into adulthood, never seeing their chosen club in the flesh, but regard themselves as massive fans. I know a few local blokes that support Liverpool. I avoid conversations about football with them, because I’d be biting my tongue, but I make a small concession because they actually attend games. I understand the mentality of fans that choose a big successful club to support. They’re hopefully going to have more to celebrate and less disappointment, but they have to understand they’re not taken seriously by others. If it’s ok to support a club from another locality, how come when tuning in to Talksport, you never hear calls from Hartlepool fans from Manchester, Exeter fans from Liverpool & so forth?
My lad was born in Kirklees and now lives in the South of England and has never lived in Barnsley but follows in the footsteps of 3 who went before him as a Barnsley fan. Is it OK for him to support a team from another locality?
Yes, that’s fine. My mate from Hemsworth has lived in Guildford for over 30 yrs, his son is a reds fan, and his sons step kids. They come to watch us when we play southern games and come up to oakwell a few times a season. They have Barnsley connections and can hardly be called glory fans.
