Glad I didn't vote for him. What a nasty thing to do when there's a big majority anyway. No money my arse. Hope you're all happy with him you Labour voters... a LABOUR government (not a Tory one) which has prioritised not to scrap the two child benefit cap. Well done Keir. Well done.
When Labour have just spent six weeks campaigning on an unshakeable position of maintaining financial discipline in regard to this issue you'd have to be pretty thick to think you could get away with challenging the new Prime Minister's authority in the first three weeks of his government. Another thirty MP's wanted a Labour amendment, but fell into line on the advice of the whips. It would have been a poor signal to them regarding future unity to have allowed the lucky seven to get away with sticking two fingers up to Labour's official position. As it turns out, it's largely the usual suspects. I'd have told them to go join their mate and form their own party. That may be why I was never in politics! And I'm very happy with the start Keir has made, by the way.
Starmer trying to be the hard man. Well nothing could be further from the truth. He will be found out soon enough. There was ways to finance the motion but that would have meant taxing the rich. Well as a Tory he would never dream of doing that. So a change of govt but same Tory policies.
Nah, this isn't the right way to go about it and the 7 know that very well. Labour can't change an election promise 3 weeks into government, they'd look ridiculous. The rebels knew this well, but choose to be destructive rather than constructive which helps no one. If all votes were free and not whipped politicians would vote for policy without any thought as to funding and delivery.
He got elected on his manifesto, you can’t go back 3 weeks into a new government. If you give in on that, there will always be a next rebellion. Some backbenchers would rather posture rather than deal in the serious , grown up world.
Removal of the 2 child cap is Labour Party policy as agreed by Conference. Labour just promised 3 billion a year to the Ukraine forever. Completely unfunded. No money for kids. Glad you are happy to keep hungry kids hungry for a completely made up nonsensical set of financial rules - that make no economic sense.
And in other news the royal family are to benefit from a £45m rise. We have all our priorities all wrong in this country.
Removal of the 3 child cap is Labour Party policy as per conference. Not all Labour policies are part of the manifesto. The role of an MP is to represent their constituents which is what people do. Funny that you dismiss wanting to feed hungry kids as posturing.
Everything is unfunded until you fund it. The 2 child cap which is both cruel, has zero impact on birth rate and makes zero economic sense is now owned by Labour. It’ll be fun watching them having to publicly support and defend their policy.
I used to be a member of the Labour Party. On my card it said Labour is a “democratic, socialist party”. I see very little democracy or socialism in this lot.
Wonder what the outcries would have been if Corbyn had suspended 4 Jewish MPs for any issue. Here we have 4 Muslim MPs suspended. The hierarchy of racism writ large. Labour really need to tackle the anti black clique at the top of their party.
Imagine being a newly re-elected Labour MP, and being stupid enough not to support the Kings Speech on which you were just elected into government. 7 of the usual suspects were that stupid and have correctly had the whip removed, long overdue in some cases. Members of the SCG demonstrating that, 3 weeks into being in the party of government, they'd prefer their usual position of protestors on the outside. Good riddance. BTW, neither of Corbyn's two manifestos included a commitment to scrap the 2 child cap, so it's something of a hypocritical stance they've taken.
Maybe the seven should join the Greens. They'd at least have a shared belief in the irrelevance of economic discipline.
Yet ‘the sensibles’ just agreed to fund a foreign war uncosted and unfunded in perpetuity. the two child cap costs the exchequer millions. It prevents growth and more importantly leaves children hungry. It stores future problems both economic and social. Still it is Labour Policy Joe to deliberately keep children in poverty. Labour are to the right of Braverman and Farage on this issue which should give them a pause for thought. But yes we would welcome those who actually represent their constituents into The Green Party.
Tax Capital Gains. Even that was taxed under Norman Lamont and Thatcher at the same rate as income tax. Tax wealth. 1% on anything over £10m would raise between £50bn and £70bn.
I thought Mr Starmer is of the line of 'country before party'? Well then he should welcome the MPs fighting to tackle child poverty in their constituency, regardless of policy. Yes, just a reminder that this is about hungry children. Not political posturing. Not elections or majorities or whips. Some of you need to give your heads an absolute shake. We need politicians to fight on these issues, never mind the ties our rulers wear.
So much for the broad church. Hopefully the 'grown ups' might stop purging elected MPs who actively want to end child poverty. Wouldn't that be a 'serious' approach?
