    My memory might be going but I'm sure in the seventies or eighties another show jumper was caught out using fences with spikes in to the poles to
    make the horses clear the fences. So called sports people doing anything to cheat for victory.

    I remember reading an article a few years ago about just that, the damage that is done to the horse's physique by constantly doing what is unnatural to them. I can't remember the author but they concluded that dressage is the cruelest of all the equine disciplines.

    Jockey's definitely do not 'thrash their steeds', there are strict rules around the use of the whip.
