All, Repainting my iron backed driveway gates as it’s been a good few years now since it was last done and the paint is flaking. I’ve started scraping them with a heat gun and scraper, which is very time consuming to say the least. Purchased some paint stripper from Screwfix, but it’s done nothing of note regarding shifting it. They just don’t make that stuff like they used to anymore. Can anyone offer any other suggestions, before I resort to getting my blowtorch and propane bottle out Cheers
If it’s the original paint from when made then it is likely to be powder coated, which would explain why your stripper is struggling.
We’re into the second month of stripping the oil from the cedar cladding on our garden room, so it can be re-oiled. It’s a nightmare job and there appears to be no quick way to do it. At least when it’s done that’s it for a few years.
If you're using a paint stripping gel like nitromors, apply the gel then wrap with clingfilm to prevent it drying out.
Have you tried Nitromors? Alternatively try either a local car paint motor factors (sells car paints to garages) or a dedicated decorators trade outlet. Stuff at places like Screwfix etc tend to be dumbed down as they are selling to the public to make it safer, often using an alcohol as a base, which will soften at best.
Nitromors used to be based on Dichloromethane (Methylene Chloride) which was easily the best chemical for stripping paint. Unfortunately it was banned under EU REACH Regulations due to its potential to cause liver cancer and the alternatives e.g. acetone based products are not in the same class. Dichloromethane was the one which bubbled up the paint within minutes. Caustic soda is the other alternative but that would mean removing the gates and dipping.
